Thanks!

Because right now, it says in iraq, there are
168,000 In country, and
30,000 in theater

The days of invasion, we had 175,000 in theater, which then narrowed off where most went to listed as "in country" and to 80,000 in theater for 1 month, then it went to all in country, and only 30,000 in theater where it has remained since may of 2003

wow, you are getting some crazy answers.

heres how it works

we will say pvt snuffy has deployed in support of operation iraqi freedom.

snuffy gets on an airplane and taken to quatar, where he is pumping gas into c-17s in and out of iraq.

Pvt snuffy is in theater. theater of ops. he isnt IN country, but he is supporting the operation. there a quite a few countries out there where we have troops who are deployed in support of that operation.

Pvt. duffy gets deployed in support of OIF as well.. he gets on a plane and lands in downtown Baghdad.

Pvt duffy is in country.

In country and in Theater mean the same thing. They are just forms of being in a combat area, on foreign soil. If you were ordered to go to Iraq and landed in Kuwait, you would be in country. Because of the area it is all a combat or red zone.

They mean the same thing. During WWII they spoke of Theater of Operations where action took place. In Nam they spoke of in Country which could refer to being in Nam or being in an area where bad guys were trying to kill you. I think it started with refering to an area of high AP as Indian Country. After a while it just meant anywhere you were that wasn't the world.

Theater is a broader area, ie ... in WW2 there was a Pacific theater fighting Japan and a European theater fighting the Germans and Italians.
