Well, I think the key thing to remember is that the bible was written in a 2,000 year old context, with a 2,000 year old style, in a language that is no longer spoken. Considering these factors, and how Jews and early Christians would have understood a phrase like that, I think it makes more sense.

Considering that it was put into God's Word (aka the Bible) and I am a Christian, then no, I would not consider it childish. I don't like calling anything from God's Word childish. It may not be the most descriptive phrase in the world, but it is represenative of Hell, which is all that matters.

Different cultures have different ways of expressing grief and despair. I suppose it those verses had been written today in America they would say 'shaking your fist' and 'trembling'.

It isn't the bible that you are having trouble with but a difference with another culture. That is a bit intolerant.

My response is always "...so God just sits up there in Heaven and lets that happen to me?" or something like that. Really, they only hurt themselves when they use that kind of logic. They make the creator of the universe sound awfully... unpleasant... when they talk like that.
