Severe bleeding can cause a person to go into a coma. The chances of coming out of a coma caused by blood loss depends on how much time lapsed while the brain had insufficient oxygen. The brain can survive only about 3-4 minutes with a complete lack of oxygen. If a person passed out from bleeding, but still had a pulse when they reached the hospital, there's a good chance of recovery with minor brain damage. If the person did not have a pulse when they were found and more than 4 minutes passed since the pulse stopped, there is not a very good chance of regaining much brain function. But, comas and brain damage are a little unpredictable, so even the most hopeless cases can turn out OK. If you know someone in a coma, they might benefit from you talking to them even though they don't respond, so visiting them can sometimes make a difference in their recovery.
