At most most places if you politely tell the waitress that you don't like it, they will take it back, and let you order something else off of the menu and remove the item you did not care for off your bill. Remember the key word here is POLITELY!!

No, of course you should not return it!
If you return food which is perfectly fine just because you don't like it, you're being incredibly rude!
Cooking is an art, and someone has actually spent both time and effort to make a dish for you to enjoy. You pay for it, very well, but if you simply don't like the food, then you should've picked something else in the first place - it's your own fault.
The only time a dish should be returned to the kitchen is if there is something WRONG with the food...

First of all you should have found out what it was. The chef worked hard on it, and you ordered it. My ex ordered a mexican styled scampi dish at an office do, he was a bit drunk and was away to return it because a) he didn't know it was so spiced or what it was, and b) to save any more embarassment, I swapped him with my Beef Stroganoff. Now I would watch what my present b.f. chose as he likes plain food, and he would react by returning it politely apologise for his mistake and order something else and pay for both, but that doesn't exclude the risk of the chef spitting in your next order!!!!! You have to watch your etiquette in restaurants. Honestly, I would return it say I would pay for it but order something I knew I liked as well so as not to make a fuss.

I have done something similar. I ordered a dish which was far too spicy and although I did not complain (thinking it was my own fault for ordering something I did not know) a waiter noticed and the plate was taken away and a new one, less spicy, brought out. I was asked to taste it to see if it was to my liking - which it was and I happily ate it.
I think it all depends on the restaurant you are in whether or not they will accept it. But you may as well try it - and I agree with the ones above that you should be polite in your request.

I think too much about peoples feelings so i probably wouldn't say anything unless they came to me, like they do, and asked if the meal was ok. THEN i might suggest ways of improving it. Or explain that because i didn't know what i was getting i just didn't like it much. In this case i wouldn't ask for my money back, but i know a few people who would.
I was very embarrased in Ireland when this god awful man and his mother, who i was with at the time, complained to the poor, red faced waitress how bad the meal was. She was almost in tears. No, you don't do that to people.

No, you should see whether you can do a swap with someone else in your party. They might love it, particularly if it's not available elsewhere. If it is really inedible from your point of view, then order something in addition, or fill up on the cheese and dessert.
I can't think of anything I would dislike that much!

Unless there's something "wrong" with it, no I wouldn't return it. Now, if I asked for no mushrooms, and there's mushrooms all in it, or if there's a hair in it or something, yes.
Also, I'm a vegetarian, so if I order something with no meat and I find meat in it, it goes back. But if I just don't like the dish, and that's happened to me before, I pay for it and don't order it again.

When this happened to me, I told them I couldn't eat it because it was too spicy for me. Could I have a carry out bag to take it home for someone else. The server brought me a simular milder dish without charge. And let me take the first one home. This was at T.G.I.Fridays. That's a way to win customers.
It's not their fault the dish didn't suit your tastes. But sometimes if you mention it, they will try to help you out.

I would never return something. I would take it home and feed it to the husbands or the dogs.
Then call it experience. If I had to nickel and dime like that I wouldn't go out.

I have been in this siruation but did not have the courage to say I did not want it. In my case the meal that arrived was not quite what I was expecting but there was nothing actually wrong with it, I just could not eat it. Unfortunately no offer of a replacement was made.
