Frog Dog! 2 of my labs still do that. It's fine Her hips are in great shape if she can do that and it doesn't bother her! Seriously. They don't lay in positions that hurt.
Haven't you seen them upside down and contorted like pretzels?
She's adorable.

How adorable! I definitely hope it's not a sign of hip pain...because all my dogs lay like this, at times. You mentioned that she has no problem getting up, or laying down. Out of curiosity, what gave you the idea that this may be a sign of hip pain?

Ah, the "Flying Frog" position! Pretty much every Pug I've known lays like that (I'd be interested to know if Pug owners here have Flying Frogs, too?), as well as a friend's Cocker/Poodle mix, a couple of Labs I've known, and some others.
If he doesn't have trouble getting into or out of it, I wouldn't worry, But if he starts having trouble getting up, or seems stiff/limping afterwards, have your vet take a look at him.

Nope. Some dogs just like to lay like that. Often, if a dog likes to lay that way and starts to develop hip pain later in life they will stop doing it. I hope that made sense.

I was told that when a dog lay down in that position is because they are pure breed, I think is true cause my shih ztu lay down the same way and in the past I had mix dog and they never lay like that, The dog is fine he is just a pured breed. Don't worry he is just Chilling

That's so funny! My dog does that too. I don't think it's got anything to do with pain - unless she exhibits other symptoms. I think it's just part of your dog's personality. My dog is a Beagle and he's a boy so we always say he's cooling off his, er.... parts, you know? It must just feel good to stretch like that. Mine does that more when he's outside for some reason. Maybe he feels more in touch with the earth or something. You could mention it to your vet when she goes for her next shots, but I doubt it's anything.

someone once told me that when a dog lays like that, its a sign of good hips. She has a good range of motion in her hips anyways.
If you are concerned about her hips, you can have xrays done to see what her OFA or PennHip rating is. That will give you a very good idea on how her hips are. PennHip ratings are better than OFA because they take more xrays at different angles.

If she's not going to be bred tho, and shows no signs of discomfort, I personally wouldnt bother with the tests. They are available tho if you want to do it.

This is very normal for some dogs. Many dogs will lay down and flip their back feet/legs out behind, as it is the most comfortable for them. Others will lay very straight like a Sphinx.

No, this is not a sign of any problem. It's just the way your dog likes to lay down.
