I read where the USS Kennedy won the Marjorie Sterrett Battleship Fund Award in 1974 and 1979 . Can I somehow pin down the month and day this award is given out ? I also know the USS Kennedy underwent a yearlong overhaul from late 1978 to 1979 . Does anybody know what month this overhaul began and the month it ended ? How can I find out ?

I can't pin down the dates of the Marjorie Sterrett Readiness Award, although IAW OPNAVINST 3590.11E:
Fleet CINCs will select annually the ship winning the award from the specified Type Command within two months after the end of the calendar year and will present the award at an appropriate ceremony on behalf of CNO.
So I would GUESS the award would be given out in MARCH or APRIL of each year.
John F. Kennedy spent most of 1978 on a Med-Cruise including Operation Display Determination (Sept. 1978)
THE Ovehaul began on 19 March 1979 and ended in Mid December 1979: The normal shipyard routine progressed uneventfully until an unknown arsonist set a series of fires on 9 April 1979. Another series of arson incidents occurred on 5 June, JFK doubled security watches to prevent a recurrence. On 14 July, the carrier shifted from drydock to Pier 5 for the remainder of her yard work. JFK conducted a fast cruise and held dockside trials on 5 December 1979
