Depends on what you call better. I owned a 2000 Ranger and overall it was a good truck but had nagging problems. Performance wise the Tacoma will chew up the Ranger. The Tacoma has also moved up to that midsize truck while the Ranger is a true compact. The truck is very small inside. I'm also not a huge fan of the torsion bar front suspension on the Ranger, the ride is a bit stiff and choppy. When I was looking at compact/midsize trucks I narrowed it down very quickly to the Tacoma and the Frontier. I liked the Ranger but the platform is 10 years and the interior is the same!!! I actually tried to stay with Ford but they did not want to deal with me. I liked the Tacoma but I thought it was too car like and the V6 had to be run on premium fuel. Nissan dealth with me and was great. Now I have a 265 HP Frontier Nismo and I love it. Not one problem in 2 years. The thing rips. Dodge kept trying to get me because it had a V8. I said big deal the V6 in the Nissan puts out more power than your V8. Go figure. It's ashame what Ford did to the Ranger. They just forgot about it and the sales are dwindling. Ford used to sell a lot of Rangers, not anymore. I wouldn't say no to the Ranger, it is a good truck but I think you can do better nowadays.
By the way I would also like to support our country but my fathers Ford wasn't build in the USA and my Frontier was. So who is really supporting who?
Also by the way. Toyota fell a little bit in quality ratings and Ford's did go up. But don't get it confused Toyota still had better overall quality ratings, it was just that Ford had improved. The Japanese still dominate the quality section, I know Ford is doing better. I heard the same stories 20 years ago too.

Tacoma easily. I've had both and the ranger just about blew up after a couple years and about 60,000 miles. I bought a Toyota pickup in 1990 and sold it a few years back after 210,000 miles. It didn't break down once, I just did regular scheduled maintenance to it.
Check resale values, Toyota's are much higher than Ford's.
Also, Tacoma's are made in the U.S.
So are Tundra's.

Both are rated very high. I have personally owned Rangers and Mazda B series which are the same truck. The oldest (1999) has 200K on it with no mechanical problems, just normal replacement parts like brakes and tires and belts. The newest a 2004 has 54K and still drives like new. The 2004 has never even had brakes. The tires went to 45K. We are talking about trucks in commercial use daily.

Toyota, always Toyota. I am on my 4th and have NEVER regretted buying that brand. I always say "Yeah, I get a new Toyota every 10-12 years whether I need it or not."
As a matter of fact, I was just in an accident in my Highlander this morning (rear ended by a Pontiac). My bumper was scraped and knocked loose, her car was totaled, air bag deployment and all.

The ranger is better by far. Reliability ? Well CNN announced a buyer beware on Toyota because their reliability isnt what people were suckered into beliving, and rated Ford the most reliable, and best quality over all imports and domestic with their cars and trucks. Their will be alot of arguements on that and the ones who will try to convince you otherwise, but in all reality the facts are their. I dont need to or want to try and convince anyone on my facts, but for the ones who are unsure on whats the best, all I can say is to take the Ford challenge. Everyone who has left the competetors behind wondering why anyone else even thinks their is any competition out their.
The ones who are diehard import, well all we can do is sit back and let them find out for themselves, or they can go to cnn.com and read the artical, or go to maintinence and repairs in Toyota for instance and try to tell all the people in their with numerous troubles how reliable they are.
Im not at all insulting the personal opinons of anyone, im just trying to make people see whats real and to think outside the box.

Depends on whose opinion you take. Remember, a very wise man once said, "Opinions are like rearends, everyone has one and they all stink". lol To me both are good vehicles. However I'll go with the Ranger for the simple reason that I want my grandchildren to have jobs. If we keep buying foreign and saying U.S. made is no good pretty soon the American companies will all be bankrupt and our grandchildren will be begging on the street corners.
