Since there are more adults at table B, the waiter or waitress probably expects a better tip, so may treat them better. Tips are the motivator, so that's the angle to look at in this cultural study.

There are so many factors in these scenarios. For example, if the single mom is cute and the waiter likes her he may treat her better hoping to get her phone number. Also, as someone mentioned, the behavior of the kid is also a factor.

To be quite honest, the server should not really assume that the female adult at table A is actually the mother. It could be the aunt, an adult sister, or a family friend. Same scenario for table B. You really can't assume that the adult male & female are the parents either.

What you should assume is that a server is trained to treat all customers equally without trying to over impress one table and sacrifice the service of another.

Depending on the age, and the type of restaurant, many factors play into this scenario. Are they small toddlers? School-age kids? Severe special needs kids? Is it a family chain style restaurant that normally serves kids? Or is it more of an upscale restaurant?

But IMO, the server should jsut try to do his/her job without passing judgment or trying to hook up with their customers.

I think a lot of it depends on how well the kid is behaving. No one wants to be around a bratty kid misbehaving and a lot of times moms don't control the kids behavior as well as dads do.

If the kid is behaving fine, then no I don't think they get treated differently, if anything the mom probably gets better service.
