The reason no rational solution is even being considered is that we have left it to irrational people to come up with that solution. The politicians in Washington have shown us that they have no idea what the American people want, and do not understand the position those of us in the rest of the Country find ourselves in due to illegal immigration.
I can see why...how many times has Pelosi, Kennedy, McCain or the President been hit by a drunk driver who gets out of their car and flees the scene?
How many times have they seen THEIR job ride off into the sunset because an illegal worker is willing to do it for half the pay?
How many times have they had to wait 3 hours to be seen at an Emergency Room because illegal aliens are crowding it up using it as their primary care clinic?
How many times have they watched in horror as the value of the home they worked hard and sacrificed for drop exponentially in value because of the new illegal neighbors packing 3 families into a single family home, parking broken cars on the street and on the lawn, and throwing trash all over the grounds?
Answer...NEVER!
The scenarios listed above are only a small taste of what we, the people, experience in our daily lives.
Given the aforementioned issue, it will fall to us, the people, to propose rational solutions to the problems because WE are the ones directly affected by the problem.
In that regard, I have a solution to stop this madness.
I think there needs to be a two-fold approach to ending illegal immigration. First, you remove the carrot on the proverbial stick that is luring them here by the millions. By that I mean require ALL businesses to verify the legal immigration status of every worker employed, and that they want to hire, through a web-based verification database. Those that are applying for a job and the verification comes back saying they are here illegally, ICE will be notified and will take said person into custody, and deport him within 3 days. In addition to deportation, any and all property, vehicles, bank accounts and other assets will be seized and auctioned off to pay for the cost of deporting them.
Right now, when people get deported, all they have to do is shell out a couple hundred bucks and come right back across and pick up where they left off, if the penalty for being in the US illegally was stricter like that, and they lost all their possessions, they would think twice about coming back across.
Now with regards to the businesses that are screwing the American worker by hiring illegals, I say we hit them the hardest, starting at the TOP and working our way down. If an employer is found to be hiring illegal immigrants, that business will be fined a minimum of $100,000 for every illegal worker they have hired, and in addition, the executive of that company will be imprisoned for one year in federal prison for each illegal worker.
And I am not talking a country club fed prison; I’m talking in there with the hard core criminals. Once this starts happening, companies will think twice.
The second part of that carrot is stop providing the social services incentive for them to come here. Prop 187 (California’s Landmark Law that was overturned by a Federal Judge) should be reinstated across the country. Deny any and all public benefits such as non-emergency medical care, education, welfare, food stamps, etc. to anyone that is here illegally.
Once the lure of a job and free healthcare and education and free handouts is gone there is not much incentive to come.
In addition to all that you completely secure the border. Then re-vamp the d*mned State Department bureaucracy to fix the problem of those wanting to come here legally and do it the right way being made to wait 5 years to get a green card. Have a limited guest worker program, where they are able to come here for a period of 2 to 5 years and work Legally.
Before being approved to be a guest worker, they must have a background check. No felons will be admitted into the guest program, they must demonstrate a proficiency in English, they must have a medical exam and be free of diseases that we have eradicated in our country such as TB. They will, as an approved guest worker, be able to obtain a temporary driver’s license for the specific period they are authorized to be in the country as a guest worker provided they provide proof of vehicle insurance, they must provide on a monthly basis continued proof of insurance on their vehicle.
If they commit a crime, get busted for DUI, let their vehicle insurance lapse and be caught driving, etc.
Their guest worker status will be terminated immediately and they will be deported and barred from ever becoming a guest worker again.
OR
We can say to the heck with a guest worker program. Who will pick the lettuce you ask? Well, we have a HUGE population of inmates sitting around in prisons doing absolutely nothing at the average cost of $36,000 per year per inmate.
THAT’S who will pick the lettuce. The American agriculture industry will contract with the state department of corrections to provide labor for their farms. They contract to pay the DOC $2-$3 per hour for each inmate, and then the DOC pays each inmate 70 cents per hour for their labor.
That will help offset the huge expenditures for incarcerating criminals, as well as having prisoners get experience in working everyday and learning responsibility, as well as letting them save money for when their release date comes so they don’t leave prison with only $250 in gate money. Not to mention they now have a skill-set and work experience they can apply to earn a living when they are released instead of having to turn back to criminal activity.

First, there is no such thing as in illegal immigrant, they are illegal aliens. There are some quality answers here with the sae basic premise. The solution lies with the citizens because og the mentioned huge disconnect from the people by the government.
Jess - I'm in NYC too and it does seem like it would collapse but there are quite a few LEGAL immigrants with some of the jobs you mentioned. NYC would function fine without illegals. There are many many people willing to work for a fair wage but if business can get away without paying the taxes, insurance, and other costs related to hiring citizens, they obviously will.
Joey B - as far as racist pigs, seems like YOU are the one equating illegals with Mexicans. The question mentions no nationalities or ethnicities. And please save the Nina, etc. argument. It it moot. We are living today with the laws of today that are not being enforced TODAY.

I dont know where you are but there have been raids and deportations in my city. We are not a border state so you probably wont hear much about them. The only mention of it on national news was because it is Obama state and he is pro-illegal. The 2 that happened in my city got 79 all together. It seems like a small number but you have to start somewhere.

This is for Joey B for goodness sakes my ancestors did not come here on the Nina, Pinta or Santa Maria, they came to Plymouth Rock and settled, my more recent family grandparents came through Ellis Island so either way they got here legally which is not what we are discussing. I for one think that everyone that has entered this country illegally should be deported along with their children back to the country of origin and than have to wait in line to come into the country like the rest of the legal immigrants had to in order to come here and make a life for themselves and their families...And WIC is paid for by our tax dollars not donations from the rich as one person has stated....

Some States are hiding them. The INS is deporting them, but so many slip through the cracks, and some are being hidden. Some States will not cooperate with the INS, but heard that the US Govt. is going to put a stop to that, which they should do. Illegal is illegal. I saw on CNN the other night that the Mexican Police is actually coming across the border as much as 60 miles, and causing trouble for the ranchers along the border. I agree, our Govt. needs to crack down on all of this.

It doesn't matter what ICE does.
Until we take away ALL of the incentives and rewards for illegals coming here they will find a way to break our immigration laws and they will be rewarded with jobs, welfare, housing, $10,000 a year public schooling, medical, WIC, etc.
One of the big "plans" that the open borders nuts have is to not only give amnesty to illegals but to also up our legal immigration substantially. We already take in 1.3 million which is overwhelming our infrastructure and is totally unsustainable but they want more. This country will look like India within our children's/grandchildrens lives unless WE stop it!!!!!!!!
Anyone who believes that illegals don't receive ALL of these benefits needs to open their eyes.

The powers that be in OUR country don't care what WE THE PEOPLE want or need. All they want is cheap labor and even more of our hard earned money as taxes for them to squander and hand out hand over fist to illegals.

Most agencies have their hands tied by GW and his cronies. But I guarantee you this will be taken care of properly and in good time. Americans are sick to death of these spongers! It will change! I believe that ICE will rise to the occasion.Or we the people will!

INS doesn't exist anymore. It is now ICE. The number of deportations and raids have increased dramatically in the past 2 years. It's still not enough, but there has been improvement -- mostly because "we the people" are insisting on it. Keep being vocal. Keep the pressure on the politicians.

I agree with Flaming. What doesn't directly affect a lot of the politicians, they could care less about what is happening to us. They don't have a clue.
