I've alway thought of being "proud" as being satisfied with ones self and ones achievements, especially those achievements which can be used to help one's community. I see proud as the recognition of those achievements. For example, I see finishing college and getting a good job as something to be proud of. My education and work experience does not just benefit me, it benefits my family and the whole community. Because of the good I am doing, I am proud (satisfied) with myself.
Vanity is an egocentric pride. Vanity does not take anything but one's self into consideration, and the only benefit to vanity is manifested to the vain person, not to their family or commmunity.
The telling difference with pride and vanity is in the attitude. Pride extends outward, benefitting many people, vanity is selfish and self centered.

As a Muslim, we are allowed to be proud on the followings:
1.Being a Muslim (pious)
2.Given syafa'at ( Saviour) by Rasullullah saw.
3.Chosen ppl to worship Islam.
4.Given access to visit the holy Mecca ( Ka'aba)
5.Recite the Alquran nul Kareem.
However, we are not allowed to be vain as the greatest is still The Almighty Allah swt. We are nothing. Everything we have with us are all given by Allah swt. Just see the dead body, whatever ppl do to the dead body, there will be no respond from the body. That is what we are. When Allah swt retrieve whatever given to us, we are just like the dead body. We are nothing.

The difference is that if you are proud you follow Islam's rules, and that your not ashamed to show it in non Islamic countries. You would be arrogant if you said yours is the only true religion, the best, that all others are wrong, and that you don't force Islam on others.

I believe the brother meant to say it is ok to have good self esteem because pride is used often in the Quran in a negative sense in the translations i have read.
He did nothing wrong he can be misquoted though by using the word proud instead of self esteem

A very thin line. The Islams are using their religion to wreak havoc on the world. Helping them be proud of this activity is what keeps them arrogant.

When pride makes you forget your need to be humane to others. I imagine for a Muslim that would be disregarding
"No one of you is a believer until he desires for his brother that which he desires for himself."-- Koran, Sunnah,

"Pride" in the connotation of knowing your abilities is virtuous. "Vanity" is bragging about it or having an incorrect perception of your own ego.
