I always find Isaiah 41:13 very comforting it says: "For I Jehovah your God am grasping your right hand, the one saying to you, do not be afraid, I myself shall help you" and 1 Peter 5: 6 -10 is comforting also.

The Story of Job will teach your friend that his hardship could be nothing more than God torturing him to prove a point to Satan.
