I always find Isaiah 41:13 very comforting it says: "For I Jehovah your God am grasping your right hand, the one saying to you, do not be afraid, I myself shall help you" and 1 Peter 5: 6 -10 is comforting also.

Ezekiel 20:25-26 I also gave them over to statutes that were not good and laws they could not live by; I let them become defiled through their gifts—the sacrifice of every firstborn—that I might fill them with horror so they would know that I am the LORD.

Romans 8 and Philippians 4 - two of the best "comfort chapters" in the whole Bible!
And I'll be praying for your friend too!

The Story of Job will teach your friend that his hardship could be nothing more than God torturing him to prove a point to Satan.
God's like that - he doesn't give a monkey's about people.
