When you first got saved and started to read the Scriptures, what was one of the very first Bible verses that you were able to put to memory?

Mine was Revelation 3:20
"Behold, I stand at the door and knock. If anyone hears My voice and opens the door, I will come in to him and dine with him, and he with Me."

This was the very first verse that was ever spoken to me by a Christian who was telling me about the good news of Jesus Christ.

Dear Primo,

I see lots of good answers here and I have to admit I don't remember the FIRST one after I got saved.

I'll tell you instead the one I think I've used most - John 14:27 - Peace I leave with you my peace I give unto you, not as the world giveth give I unto you. Let not your heart be troubled, neither be afraid.

I sure am glad that God's Word does not wear out and that our heavenly Father doesn't have a Pay-As-You-Go plan for using His Word!

For His glory,
JOYfilled

Revelation 3:20 was the only verse I knew as well. However, it was not the one that shone like a beacon in my heart when the Holy Spirit opened my eyes to His Word. In fact, to this day I do not remember the verse that I first read where the Bible became a reality to my fresh, new spirit. It was in the Living Bible, and it was in the New Testament--that's all I know.

When I connected Matthew 27:46 to Psalms 22, the Word started to come alive to me.

And about the ninth hour Jesus cried with a loud voice, saying, Eli, Eli, lama sabachthani? that is to say, My God, my God, why hast thou forsaken me? Matthew 27:46

Psalms 22, which was written about a thousand years before the fact, starts out like the above verse. 22 goes on to describe the Crucifiction in detail, even the Romans casting lots for Christ's garments.

So, instead of having a weak moment, as some have suggested, Jesus was actually teaching right from the cross. He was pointing to Psalms 22, saying that prophecy's been fulfilled.

How awesome is that?

Well I was raised christian and remember John 3:16 the most in Sunday School-- but I also remember learning Proverbs 3:5-6 "Trust in the Lord with all your heart and do not lean on your own understanding, in all your ways acknowledge Him and He will make your paths straight"
I know there were many more--- like Romans 6:23 "For the wages of sin is death" and Romans 3:23 "All have sinned and fall short of the glory of God" ( but I was probably older when really memorizing those.
OH of course John 14:6 "I am the way, truth and the life, no one comes to the Father but through Me" (Jesus speaking)
But like I said as a child, I remember learning John 3:16 first.

See Primoa, I always give you WAY more than you asked for, why can't my answers just be short a simple! geesh.

I can't remember, but one verse that has always been precious to me is:

Proverbs 3:5-6 (New International Version)
New International Version (NIV)

5 Trust in the LORD with all your heart
and lean not on your own understanding;

6 in all your ways acknowledge him,
and he will make your paths straight.

John 14:6 I am the way, the truth and the light, No one comes to the Father except through me.

John was the first book I read and learned from and came to know the Lord.

I was saved as a young child. And honestly the first I think I learned was John 3:16. Although one of my favorites now is Psalms 130.

Acts 1:8 Jesus said, "Ye shall receive power after that the Holy Ghost comes upon you."

I read the book of Acts many times...I knew this was going to happen to me.....I prayed for it, and two months later, after I had been baptized,,,,,I received the Holy Ghost and spoke in tongues....Thank God,,,I didn't meet those who say it is not for today...what if I had believed them, like so many do?......Jesus commanded his followers to wait for the promise of the Father....I waited and received...the first verse I memorized and I still love it.

"I know that my Redeemer lives and in the end he will stand upon the earth." -Job 19:25

"If you obey my command, you will remain in my love, just as I have obeyed my father's and remain in his love." -John 15:10

I'm in a discipleship class that meets every Tuesday night and part of our curriculum is weekly Scripture memory verses.

There's softward called E-Sword which is electronic Bible software. You can download multiple translations, compare translations, program study guides and reading plans, and add memory verses. I find it to be a very useful tool in memorizing and referencing Scripture.
