You need to train it to perfection when on the lead first.. Then start in a place with no distractions (like your back yard) and work up from there. It may be useful to use a tab leash so that you can still correct your dog if you need to.

You should always have these things consistant with on leash before trying off leash and I don't mean a 4 or 5 foot lead but a 20-50 foot lead or rope.
