I'm trying to make Halloween cupcakes for my daughter's class, and I wasn't thinking ahead. The decorations I want to do would look best on white frosting, but I got yellow cake mix.

Thanks, everyone. The I made them with the white frosting, then I cut a Milano cookie in half, wrote RIP in decorating gel, and then sprinkled Oreo cookie crumbs to look like dirt. They turned out pretty cool.

I don't think it matters...as long as they taste good...I doubt the kids are going to be looking to see if they think the frosting is a good color match for the cupcakes.

It doesn't look weird. It's not like you're using purple frosting on yellow cake. Nobody will even know what kind of cake it is until they eat it. Why don't you try adding orange food color into the frosting and mix them together for the Halloween theme?

I make cakes for a hobby and its not weird at all. I use white frosting all the time with yellow cake. Most of the time i need to add food coloring, so i have to use white frosting.

White is a great foundation for any kind of cake, it is a blank canvas.
You could add any kind of extract flavor you want (the dark or colored ones may change the color of the frosting).

I don't think that is weird. Kids will not care about the color of the frosting, all they want is the cupcake.

Why would it be weird? Does even a cake have to fit some imaginary fashion statement? Taste should be the only criteria.

No, that's fine. As for the flavor instead of the actual looks, it would look kind of weird being that it is Halloween and things have to be dark, but you know how it is :]

I don't think it matters. It will taste fine. I personally think white icing goes better with yellow cake than chocolate icing does.

it looks fine, white frosting is one of those frostings that always work, plus kids don't care as long as it tastes good
