and if it is, then why only share junk food with kids one day a year? How many of you open up your homes to feed those without food?

Wouldn't it be cool if every day could be a "special" day when we share with people who are less fortunate than we are!!
Didn't Jesus teach us that what we do (or don't do) for the least of these here on earth, it is done (or not done) for Him?
If we are NOT feeding the hungry...we are NOT feeding Jesus Christ!
EDIT: Surely, you do know that Halloween is a time of innocent fun? I wouldn't miss the chance to give candy to all the little hobgoblins in my neighborhood good, wholesome, healthy chocolate!
And if a hungry beggar should happen to show up at my door, he can come inside and have a sandwich and some nice apple cider, with the rest of the gang. We'll be watching Halloweentown movies on television...

Sharing with the hungry is good charity, whether Christian or not. And I do not give junk food to trick-or-treaters (who are not generally hungry beggars). I keep a jar of pennies and let them grab a hand full.
But there's a great deal of difference between feeding the hungry and OPENING YOUR HOME to do so. You can feed the hungry through donations to soup kitchens or food pantry organizations, including either food or cash. But opening your home, especially to the homeless, is just asking for trouble. Very poor people tend to feel justified in stealing, for one thing, and for another, putting them out into the cold at night can be harder than you think. More than once I have had an apartment turn into a "crash pad" to the point where I had to move out. One cannot then use that landlord for a reference after that, you may be sure. I will not let that happen again.

I give all year long. Yes, feeding someone who is hungry who may come to my door is good. I would do it in a heartbeat.
BUT~ Halloween is the ONE day I get to spoil the neighbor's children, and generally have a fun time answering the door. I don't know who you think may never give, but I find people like that to be very rare in my neck of the woods. Everyone is very giving and have kind hearts and do much good and service work in this world.
Edit: Hey Paulo, the needy don't know who gives it. And all you know about is my avatar which isn't me. LOL I just kind of object to a question that echoes a bit of judgmentalism. However, let's see what the answers say. I'm very curious.

We are all equally guilty of removing direct contact with the needy from our lives, however, it's still a good thing to donate to a food pantry or send a check to homeless shelters. My point is that we should all give not just of our bounty but we should volunteer on occasion to actually get down and dirty with the folks that have less than we do. PEACE!

"The poor are with you always." Halloween has become a time for people to try to create "neighborhoods" which are safe and welcoming. It is not an act of charity to give candy to kids at your door, it is an act of social bonding.
If you don't want to participate...sit around in the dark until the people at your door go away.

Halloween is a FUN holiday. It's so fun to see kids come to your door all dressed up and asking for candy...
If someone is hungry i won't turn them away, I'd feed them! Even if I only had bread and water!

Sadly, most of the people I know who have spent a lot of time feeding the poor were doing community service to work off a DWI.

It is even if it is not Christian charity. I don't open up my apartment to give food to the poor but my husband donates $24.00 every year to the poor people for me, him and his first wife every Ramadan. Giving junk food to little kids is not charity.

Because its fun. Christianity doesn't prohibit fun or humanity. Only pharisees do.
Also, I would never turn a hungry person at my door away without feeding them.

Give a man a fish - You fed him for a day and encourage him to come back tomorrow. Teach a man to fish and you have fed him for a lifetime, he can abandon his begging ways and help others.
