You're so right. Considering what Christ's original followers probably wore being poor fisherman and all. The only thing required in the true church is faith and an open heart. All should be welcomed.
Fellowship was never intended to be a fashion show or a shake down.

Sorry I don't accept that second part. Thats people inflicting their thought that if you HAVE nice clothes then you should show respect and dress accordingly. Fine, let them have a special room full of nice clothes to give my homeless teens as they walk through the door for service. If they can't do that, back off. I am a youth minister at a catholic church in the intercity and when my kids join me at service they are dressed in what ever is on their backs, including KISS t-shirts and if I'm really lucky, one of the ones who wear ICP shirts.
I know there is story about the wedding party and the person being kicked out because of their attire, but I think Jesus was referring to people who show up with poor spiritual attire, a lack of reverence, not the clothes on their back.

It doesn't. But in admitting this, I think it's important to remember that it is appropriate to 'put on our best' because God always puts on His best for us. Our church family is casual. Even the preacher doesn't always wear a coat and tie; but he's always nicely dressed. Even so, if someone came in with blue jeans and a tee-shirt, no one would object as long as it was modest. Immodest dress would be properly handled. A young, visiting girl came a few weeks back with a shirt cut WAY TOO low. One of our young mothers who knew the girl took her aside, privately, and suggested appropriate attire. The girl was not offended. But I guess that's not your point.
One last thing. Some visitors are impacted by appearance. That's why we have a nice, clean building and encourage people leading in the worship service to be 'dressed up.' But it's not a requirement. We can't require what God doesn't require.

I believe it doesn't say you have to dress up. It says to wear modest clothes. This means not real sexy, low cut (to show breasts), short enough to show too much private areas, or vulkgar sayings on clothes. You should not dress to tempt the opposite sex. Find a church that has a more leanient dress code. Assembly of God is one. You just need to look for one and be sure it is a Bible teaching church and only the Bible is taught. Yes, churches do make their own dress codes and it is wrong, as long as the person is decent looking and not in short shorts and a braless tank top..&ect, it shouldn't be a problem.. Understand??? I sure pray so.

I feel the same way. I've actually known people who were henpecked out of a church because they dressed too casual. What would Jesus have said to that! I don't dress up for church. I feel it's pointless since God doesn't think any better of me for how I dress. I may actually appear worse to him if I get all wrapped up in vanity, thinking that I can actually please him by throwing on a dress and some make-up. If it's about respect, then I respect God by following the example of Jesus. And the Bible says there was nothing special about his appearance.

It is a choice. Some feel they are showing respect to dress up; other think that clothes don't matter in God's presence. Both views have been expresses here, and both have validity. Your faith is more important, as is a church community in which everyone is accepted and all points of view are respected.
I prefer informal worship in a church where few people dress up and several people bring their dogs. But I respect that others may feel differently.

There is no "rule". It's common sense.
Would you show up in court in overalls and muddy boots?
No. Not unless you just walked in from the fields.
I have worn everything from "dressy" work clothes to nice jeans & blouse. No judgement.
The clothes are an excuse for people who really don't want to go or they need to find a less judgemental group at a different church.
If you were going to meet the president, you would put on something decent. It's a respect thing.

Nowhere in the Bible does it say you have to wear a suit to church. There are several churches in the area I live that the men wear blue jeans and sport shirts to church on Sunday.
New Hope Worship Center for one.

I think it is done more out of respect than anything. That being said I normally wear jeans and a t-shirt to church. It is what is inside that is important to God. Not how we look. However I do think the clothing should be modest.

There is no specific rule in the Bible but it is simply a mark of respect to dress to show that you are going to something very special, having said this it appears many females actually dress down and think this is alright,it isn`t.
