I believe christians are christians based on their objective faith in (basically based on the Nicene creed). This faith is FUNDAMENTAL and shared by major christians, so groups which may follow Jesus but follow a book aside from the bible, or do not acknowledge the trinity (as mysterious as it maybe, but why can't God be of a nature beyond human understanding). These points (though I may have missed one or two out) are:
-the bible being the word of God
-the deity of Jesus Christ / the Trinity
-"substitutionary atonement" (i.e. basic salvation from sins through Christ's dying as a substitute for us and His blood atonement for us) through God's grace and man's faith
-the resurection of Christ
However, most denominations are formed on the basis of disagreements with other aspects of the faith. e.g. being able to lose your salvation, or eternal salvation, how you meet etc. The interpretation of the word can be different, depending on the context that it is read within. A good set of objective beliefs or aspects of the objective faith from the bible will be consistent, and the bible will help "explain itself".
I would say that coming to know the proper faith will be based on two things:
- the bible, that God has outwardly given us
- the Spirit, that God has a born again christian has received within (like someone else mentioned in John 4:23-24, God is seeking those that will worship Him IN SPIRIT and truthfulness)
It is also important to recognise, that there are some aspects of belief or objective faith which are more important than others, and that you may find it incredibly difficult where believers in a church ALL have exactly the same beliefs, but at least if they have the most important beliefs right, then hopefully that'll lead you on the right track.
If you are genuinely seeking, it will require prayer (seek and you shall find), and discernment, examining the scriptures just as those in Berea (Acts 17:11).
To help you find what you are looking for, I'd like to recommend a free study bible from www.biblesforamerica.org. This is an excellent translation from the greek (a lot of translations maybe easier to read, but lose the original meaning from the greek), which has a lot of good footnotes and cross references.
May the Lord arrange for you to come to know Him and follow Him that you may be well pleasing to Him and come to the full knowledge of the truth.

Find out what Jesus said and through the Holy Spirit He will show you. It's probably not going to be a sudden thing, but a ongoing thing that helps you in your relationship with Him.
This is something you might want to note:
John 4
21 Jesus declared, "Believe me, woman, a time is coming when you will worship the Father neither on this mountain nor in Jerusalem. 22 You Samaritans worship what you do not know; we worship what we do know, for salvation is from the Jews. 23 Yet a time is coming and has now come when the true worshipers will worship the Father in spirit and truth, for they are the kind of worshipers the Father seeks. 24 God is spirit, and his worshipers must worship in spirit and in truth."
Note that. Because Jesus wasn't mentioning any particular denomination there. He was talking about knowing God personally. If you trust Him, He will show you what that is.

While I am currently an agnostic, I do know about the history of Christianity.
All Christian religions except for Catholic and Orthodox were founded by Men. The Catholic and Orthodox religions both stem from a line of bishops starting with Peter -- who was appointed head of the Church by Jesus.
Bottom line -- if you aren't Catholic or Orthodox -- you are a heretic.
