Well . . .first, there's rock-solid proof outside the Bible that he was actually the prefect in Judea . . .

Pilate was a rough guy, according to two Jewish writers: Josephus and Philo of Alexandria. He eventually was recalled to Rome. While on the way, the Emperor died, and Pilate took that opportunity to disappear into history.

Scooter,

Get the book "Pontious Pilate" by Paul Maier (not sure of the spelling of the last name. google it.)

It is admitedley a "fiction" novel, but it is extremely well researched. (every name in the book is actually a historical character)

At the end, in a seperate section, the author goes into the various theorys and historical threads from history and puts forth several possibilites on what actually happened to Pilate.

He shows the legends and traditions that sprung up afterward. He leaves it to the reader to decide which, if any, has more credibility. Since thats really all we have from history, any conclusions are just educated guesses.

But it is the best attempt that I have seen on the subject.
The book may be out of print, but you should be able to find a used one online (hardback or paperback).

It is an EXCELLENT read.

Hope that helps.

Supposedly, he thought Jesus was innocent .....thus the story of him washing his hands of it...I think he just did what the people wanted, but didn't want the burden of it. Not sure how long he lived after the Crucifixion, but supposedly when he died, his body was taken to a nearby lake in nearby Lucerne & thrown in. That's all I know, hope it helped a little.

That is one of the most common themes in the bible. That once their part was played they were no longer written about. I feel that Pilate was very guilty and that was why he washed his hands of Jesus in the first place. He had no scapegoat and in essence laid the blame at Jesus's feet.

Ever wonder what happened to Mary Magdalene?

Josephus wrote about Pilate in his 'Antiquities of the Jews.' Go here and scroll down to Chapter 3:

He should have been made a saint by the Church, and so should Judas. Without the crucifixion, they couldn't have had their religion.

What probably happened was that he hung around for a while longer, then Rome transferred him to another post, then he retired, then he died. But I don't really know.

The Roman record states that he was eventually recalled to Rome where he most likely retired and lived a quiet life.

According to medieval Christian mythology, he converted to Christianity and actually succeeded in converting the Emperor Claudius as well. There are other legends that he committed suicide over the guilt of having killed Jesus. But since Jesus never existed, none of these legends could possibly be true.

No, he was overthrown just a short time later...............I will have to check but I have read that he was removed a few years later - he was the governor of Rome at the time.

EDIT: He was removed in 36 AD - how he died is not known..........lots of legends.

Pilate died.
He was so wishy-washy in his governing Israel that there is scant evidence of his existence as Roman Procurator.
