My stepfather and I had a pretty terrible relationship throughout my childhood; always fighting and yelling at each other. He and my mother divorced and we all went our separate ways. I am now a Christian and last year, I reconnected with my stepfather and we have a wonderful stepfather/stepdaughter relationship NOW. I'm getting married in 8 months and I want to share a dance with my stepfather but I can't find an appropriate song for us. All the father/daughter songs are about the past and how great it was - I need a song (it can be religious or not) that talks about a rough past or a reconciliation. It can be any genre, really. I'm 22 and my stepfather is 40 - we like all styles of music. Does anyone know of any songs that talk about an apology or forgiving the past?

Thanks for all the help so far guys.

I love that Brad Paisley song, but again, it doesn't apply AT ALL. When my mom and him got married, I locked myself in my room for hours, crying.

I should also mention that my biological father committed suicide almost 5 years ago, so any songs about death might not work here - my family might see it as me stepping on my real dad's toes. All the lyrics with lines like "wish I could have told you" would apply more to my real dad.

To answer the last answer I received: YES, I do want to bring up the past because we are very happy with our new relationship and feel proud that we overcame our differences. No one in my family knows we have reconciled and I'd love to find a song that sort of illustrates how our forgiveness occured.

I would not have a song with the purpose of "making amends".

I think it's great that you and your stepdad worked through your problems, but that's between you two. I would feel very uncomfortable as a guest to watch you two dance to a heartbreaking song about "We used to fight, now we're alright" LOL.

Instead, I would write him a heartfelt letter telling him how glad you are that you've overcome your differences. In it, you can write the lyrics to a specific song that moves you, but I don't think I'd dance to it in front of tons of people....

Good luck and congrats :)

Do you really want to drum up the past on such a wonderful day? You say you have reconciled, so try not to make an uncomfortable situation. There are many songs that would make the both of you feel great. It is up to you,but it seems more special to put the past behind you.

"One True Friend", by Better Midler. It is from the movie soundtrack for "One True Thing" with Renee Zelwigger and Meryl Streep. Beautiful song, and appropriate. Congrats on your upcoming wedding!

Mike and the Mechanics...
"Living years"...

Will be ideal, although maybe a slightly different angle than the one you were thinking of.

Good luck yeah.

"Let's Be Us Again" by Lonestar, seems to be fitting. :)
