(This answer assumes you are in the US)
The best way is to ask some neighbors what they get channels they get and what kind of antenna they use.
You can also go to the "TV Listings" area of Yahoo and enter your ZIP code. It will give you a local listing of TV channels. My experience is that the listing includes channels that can't be received with just "rabbit ear" antennas.
Another way is to enter your location at the first link below and find out where your local TV transmitters are located and what kind of antenna you might need.

the Ariel isn't what gives you the channel..
if you are buying an Aeriel for your TV whither it be a normal plug in or on the roof Aeriel and you live in the UK then you will only receive channels 1 - 5
if you bought a digi box then it will give you a whole list of channels including channels 1-5. I would list all of them but there are too many to wirte down Plus you can find out which channels you receive if you go to their website..or look in the Argos catalog in the digi box section.
if you are buying sky then go to the sky website to see what they offer

some one stated all channels will be HD in 2008. This is not true.
All off air channels are going to be digital.
converter boxes will be available, with the US government will be issueing 40.00 coupons.
For your question..........
Your local news paper will tell you the local channels or call the city government.

you should be able to access all the PBS channels & network channels like NBC, CBS, Fox etc....
Also note in 2009 all TVs will need to be HD, so you may have to get cable/satellite to watch any TV.
