It is the opposite of a right-side-up card? Such as arrogance or vanity to a card that would otherwise mean triumph, pleasure, gain etc. ??? And more imporantly - are they read as up-side-down when facing the reader or the querent?

So which way is right-side-up? From the reader's side or the querent's side?

hello Tagos

Upside down is refered to Reversed Cards.

Sometimes the meaning is the opposite, sometimes not. As you build your relationship withe the tarot you will gain a better understanding of what card means what reversed.

I run a course on the tarot & always advise student to only attempt the reversed once they have fully mastered the upright or at least feel at home with them. If not the usually just get confused with an already complex subject.

The card would be reversed from the readers perpective, as the cards face the reader.

In Peace

Its the reader, and yes the card up-side-down is the opposite or reversed meaning of the card. But not in an extreme, left does not become right in all cases.

yes, it is the opposite of the card's right side up meaning. The cards are read right side up to the reader.

Generally, it means to reverse the meaning, but you have to look at the whole spread to that point and interpret it as it makes sense in the spread.

Whether the card is reversed is in relation to the reader.

some people believe it has reverse meaning but in all the books I've read they've said that there is no such thing as reverse cards...
I guess it depends on how you want to use/interpret them.
I wish I could give a source but my books are at home...
