Because it was scary as crap, that's why.

Because what the devil can do to us is way scarier than what any human imagination can dream up. I had to walk out of "The Grudge" because I was so scared. When I came home and told my friend I had done so, she said, "Why did you go see that? Don't you know that that kind of thing and worse actually happens to people?" That really opened my eyes and I quit watching movies like that.

Either that, or because it had a Catholic in it. How could that *not* be voted best picture. ;) (Just playin' with you, Midge).

The movie is very well made, for one. It scares the bejesus out of me and I'm not religious. That says something.

The "true story" behind The Exorcist is nowhere near what the movie is like, anyway. It's so embellished from the "true" story that you can't really recognize the similarities unless you know in advance that the movie was based on that particular case study. You fail at trying to get us to admit that we're all secretly scared of demonic possession.

What I'm more interested in is how anybody gets away with their stupid "Ooh, I'm possessed!" bids for attention in the first place. If somebody tried to pull that "Oh no, a demon has me!" crap on me I'd slap them hard and tell them to stop fishing for attention and grow up and deal with the world like the rest of us.

Because true stories of spiritual possession is scary.

Because it was scary. And scarred forever many unsuspecting movie-goers.
The idea that something evil is out there, that we cant see, cant control, and cant fight against is scary in itself.
Although i must say Hollywood did distort the actual story quite a bit.

It is because nothing is more scarier then what could actually happen. A true life/real life situation is always more intense and scary then one that is completely fiction.

If you're talking about The Exorcist, that wasn't a true story. The story that Blatty heard turned out to have been greatly embellished, before he embellished it even more for his book.

It was heavily dramatized and made particularly horrific. Anyone who has been present at the casting out of demons will not recognize these films as showing the reality - which is almost mundane.

Probably BECAUSE it's true. Makes it a lot more interesting than a purely fictional story.
