why is this?

1) Yes, it's true.

2) The reason, as reported by another answer but not explained, is that these 2 different masters are at odds with each other. You cannot serve both wholly faithfully - you must, at least occasionally, betray either one or the other.

For example, if you have the opportunity to right a great wrong by donating an amount of money that you can easily afford, doing so would definitely not serve mammon. Yet, a Christian would *need* to perform such an act - and do so without seeking gain, even public recognition.

The Scripture for this implies that people do serve both God and mammon (money). But by doing so: ' ... he will hate one of them and love the other. Or he will be faithful to one and dislike the other (Matt. 6:24)

I was going to mock your use of mammon, but apparantly it's an old-timey word for wealth and money. It doesn't mean if you make money that you're against God; but if money, some paper or chunks of metal, are more important to you than doing God's work, then you're not really serving God with all you have.

Ignorance is bliss, there pure evil. Mammon is money. No you can not serve both. Either all affection is on one or the other. No riding the fence.

I wouldn't serve mammon.

Maybe a mammal though. Especially if it was a mammoth. I'd bring it dinner.
