The sermon on the mount gets to the heart of the matter, literally. Jesus fulfills the Old Covenant in in this matter-of-factly lesson. Prohibition to murder doesn't help dealing with the world. Prohibition to hatred does. Prohibition to adultery doesn't help dealing with the world. Prohibition to lust does. If I control my actions but don't control my heart, I'll go crazy. So yes, the sermon on the mount does provide a realistic approach to dealing with the material world.

Some of it is practical advice; some of it is more a vision of how the world "ought" to be, but never has been.

The entire sermon is to be found in the Talmud, by the way; it's not original to "Jesus."
