It's a metaphor.

It means that God approved of the offering!

Next time-put it in context:

Genesis 8:20-30 (New International Version)
New International Version (NIV)
Copyright © 1973, 1978, 1984 by International Bible Society

20 Then Noah built an altar to the LORD and, taking some of all the clean animals and clean birds, he sacrificed burnt offerings on it. 21 The LORD smelled the pleasing aroma and said in his heart: "Never again will I curse the ground because of man, even though [a] every inclination of his heart is evil from childhood. And never again will I destroy all living creatures, as I have done.

22 "As long as the earth endures,
seedtime and harvest,
cold and heat,
summer and winter,
day and night
will never cease."

What does it say about God.

It says that God Loves YOU more than he loves animals.
Unless you want the opposite.

You might not know this but after the flood, well do you think NOAH had MONEY?
Could Noah just pull out a bag of gold and give it to a charity as a pleasing sacrifice unto the lord?

What does Noah Own?
You see, Noah is offering to God his posessions.
Now you may think, why doesn't he just give the animal to someone for charity.

Well thats nice, everyone else is dead....

So that rules that out.

So if you really care about animals ....
Be like me... Be a vegetarian..

Or can you justify why you eat meat?
And you don't think The God of the universe can justify himself?
If you as a human can justify the slaughtering of animals when you can go on a vegetarian diet.
Do you think that God can justify himself too?

Burnt sacrifices were often killed a certain way, the animals weren't made to suffer.
Maybe you think burnt sacrifice was with live animals being burned slowly,, you watched too many pagan videos.
Do you have any idea how Kosher foods are prepared?
How the animals are killed?

Hmm, how do you think the animals were killed.... I am talking about the meat that you eat....
Do you really think they were prepared as good as the sacrifices were?

Anyway, it would be good if you can be honest with yourself but this is the best I can do for you.
Next time you try to speak against God, you need to at least do a little research and comparison with your own self.

Oh and yeah. This is not a question of God's existence, it is a question of God's character.
if you want to study this, you need to pick one or the other, dont do them both at the same time or else youll get lost.

If you want to study if God exists, focus on that.
If you want to study if the God that does exist is JUST or UNJUST, Good or EVIL. Then study that.
Dont mix them up.
Dont make statements or questions that are geared toward the first category if you are studying the second one.
and vice versa.

As for Christianity, study the ressurection of Yeshua.
Jesus Christ.
Pray to God and be honest with him.

"I don't know if you're real but I really want to know, and even if I find that you are real, I am not sure if I can trust you, if you are really as loving as people say because I read things in the bible that confuse me and I believe is not a very good thing for a loving being to do, please help me understand"

Pray that to Yeshua/Jesus.
If you are an atheist then it wouldn't hurt you.
I can understand if you have your own religion already.
in that case pray to God. whoever he/she/it may be.

Just say God, I am not sure which one you are or who you are, but you are the creator of the universe and you are powerful over everything, reveal yourself to me and help me to know you and to know your plans for me. Help me to obey you and have faith in you.

The Lord will not hide from those who seek him diligently.

It says he only wanted the CLEAN ones as sacrifice (hence the pleasing smell)...the whole thing is symbolic. Not an actual event.

You know how people try to describe something beyond their current understanding and will use metaphors which are then translated ten thousand times by underpaid and overworked scribes, etc.

Geesh...whisper something in someone's ear, pass it around and the last guy stands up and says what he heard. You know how the game goes kids.

The meaning is symbolic of pure hearts, not obedience to a book or people who took notes. Pure hearts, clarity, love and acceptance.

Hello?

Noah came off of a boat that he had been on for months, suffering whatever he suffered while on the boat, and realizing that the whole world he knew just died, and made sacrifices to the honor of God. What was pleasing to God is the trust that Noah still had in Him. Noah was grateful to God for saving his life. I would tell you that it was this trust in God and devotion to God which was pleasing to God, and rose as an aroma pleasing to God. Anyone can sacrifice an animal, but why are they doing it? Noah pleased God the same way anyone can, by trusting Him.

Still, people only look on the outside, and not the inside!

No.
We like the smell of barbecue, yes? Just as you said. I love the smell of good barbecue!
But this kind of smell was a smell of glory and honor- for in those days they offered up burnt offerintgs as thanksgiving and honor to God.
These were the ways back then, before Christ had come to be the ONE sacrifice for sins. There were many types of offerings back then-- from sin offerings to praise offerings....
Nehemiah 10 speaks about some of the different offerings--
33 for the bread set out on the table; for the regular grain offerings and burnt offerings; for the offerings on the Sabbaths, New Moon festivals and appointed feasts; for the holy offerings; for sin offerings to make atonement for Israel; and for all the duties of the house of our God.

Isn't it sad one of the answerer's had to put a Copyright on a quote from the bible. Just another example that this book is of man not god.

Learn from the principles taught and don't sweat the Details. You will enjoy the book more and get more out of it.

once again, we'd like to remind this audience that the afore mentioned bible was written by men. Crazed, half literate men. Not God. Crazy men.

No, it's better than human sacrifice,...it's a picture of Jesus dying on the cross that would come later.

what kind of god is this? so much cruelty towards its own creations....grrrrr

if he lived today, he would have been caught up by PETA activist (people for ethical treatment of animals ) & put behind bars for this unethical act.
