because I had noticed him coughing quite a bit and having a runny nose. The vet said he has pnuemonia. There is a chance he may not make it because his is so young and small (8 weeks, 1 1/2 lbs.) The vet recommended I return him to the breeder and get a refund, but I refuse to do that because the breeder was obviously not taking care of this baby and let him get this sick. I'm not going to let him die just so I can get my money back. He started antibiotics yesterday, I am keeping him warm and comfortable day and night, not letting him out in the cold, giving him all the love and attention he wants, and I have a "Vicks Vapor Plug-In" next to his crate at night to try to help clear up his chest (vet recommended this). I am very worried about my little guy. If anyone else has had an experience with pnuemonia, please let me know if there is anything else besides what I listed above that I can do for him. Thank you so much (and my little Wilson thanks you too!)

He is not eating as much as I'd like for him to, but he is eating, drinking, and pottying like he should.

I'm so sorry you have to go through this. BYB's and puppy pimps make me so angry.
One thing I might suggest (check with your vet first because he's so young and tiny) is to bring him in the bathroom when you shower so he can breathe the moist air. This was advice given to me by my vet when my dog had kennel cough.
Take care, say lots of prayers, and please keep us updated as to his progress, OK?

This brings up and couple of important points. Always do an agreement for purchase (contract) with a breeder. If they don't use one, then don't buy from them. Make sure that it has a "subject to satisfactory vet exam" clause in it. It is also good to have a penalty for the breeder if the dog doesn't check out at the vet - where (at your choice) return the animal OR the breeder is responsible for paying for the costs of the illness if the animals aren't healthy.
There are some great powdered puppy foods (you mix them with water or organic chicken broth and bottle feed them) that may help get Wilson over this illness. Keeping him warm is very important.
Hope he is on the fast track to getting better. Try to give him the antibiotics at the same time every day so you keep his blood levels even.

I don't know much about pneumonia but as far as the breeder you should call the breeder immediately.
Where I live you have 10 days to notify the breeder and you have 3 choices return the pup and get a refund, return the animal and get a replacement ( I understand and agree with not doing this) the third is keeping the dog and attempt to cure it and the breeder has to pay up to the purchase price.
YOu need a vet report and find out the laws immediately.
Good Luck and I hope he will make it

I bought a puppy from a breeder and he was really sick I did every thing I could to get him help spent lots of money and time. My puppy didn't make it. I was so sad. But I was in contact with the breeder from the beginning she was really understanding and helped pay some of the vet bills and when my puppy passed away she replaced my puppy for free. Maybe you could contact your breeder and see if she's willing to help you out in your time of need. Sorry about your puppy and good luck

Small breed puppies can easily become hypoglysemic when taken away from there mothers and the only environment they have ever known, the symptoms include diarhea, heavy breathing and they become very lethargic, I dont trust what your vet is telling you as this puppy should be in his care on a saline drip and heavy antibiotics.
Please seek a second opionion, I know it will be costly but often proves to be a life saver.
In the meantime keep doing as you are with keeping him warm, but keep him really quiet too, less picking up and keep lots of people away from him as the more going on around him the more stressed he will become.

oh the poor thing. but you really should document everything that you do for the puppy. i would contact the breeder and let her know that the puppy she sold you has pnuemonia and is now under the care of the vet and on meds. you should suggest that she pay for the vet care also. i hope that your puppy gets well and doesn't have any long term affects from this. good luck.

I have no experience with pneumonia, but you should get the vet to write a report and you should contact the breeder. People who breed and pass off sick puppies like this bank on the fact that you don't want that puppy to die and don't want to return it. You should make a stand and don't let her get away with it. You are likely one in a long line of people who have experienced the same thing from this breeder. You are helping her to stay in business by keeping quiet.

Is the vet sure it isn't Parvo? Had he gotten any shots from the breeder? I would call the breeder and tell her/him what is going on and ask about the other pups in the litter as to their health status. Did the vet give you any antibiotics to give him for the pneumonia?
I think I would try another vet, also.

Whatever you do get vet records and and document everything you do for your baby. Cause if there is a chance that the puppy doesnt make it then you will then want your money back or a replacement puppy, and neither of that will happen if you dont have letters from the vet.
I'm praying for your puppy. i have also heard that baby food is good for puppies when they are ill

To combat pneumonia he needs to be well-hydrated... you can try mixing canned dogfood with water to get him to drink more.
If he becomes dehydrated, you can phone the vet and have them teach you how to give sub-cutaneous fluids (putting fluid under the skin).
Talk to your vet about whether or not postural drainage would be helpful (basically putting the dogs head in a down position with the rest of the body higher to allow the mucous in the lungs to come out.
Good luck!
