Have a place for everything, and everything in it's place.
Start with paperwork. Please get yourself some kind of filing system, to place all your important papers in. In alpabetical order is best.
Papers you no longer need, etheir trash, recycle, or shred.
Also, same with magazines, newspapers, etc. when done with them, recycle or trash.
Please do this as a daily task-as you go thru your mail, organize-bills, etc.
As for clothes, immediately put dirty clothes where they belong, once you change clothes. When you do your laundry, put things away once they are folded, where they belong. Things to hang up, place on hangers, and put in the closet where they belong-immediately.
You could also consider writing yourself a daily to do list.
Actually, pick a day of the week to clean the bathroom, one to clean the kitchen, livingroom, diningroom, bedrooms, etc. Laundry day. For weekly tasks, make a to do list for that.
What works for me is I sit down, think about what room I want to clean on what day. Then I schedule it. Same for laundry day.
For daily tasks, have a to do list do the dishes, take out the trash, Make the bed daily.
If you need to, start with your bedroom. Getting your clothes all put where they belong. Dusting the furniture, and vacuuming the room. Or if you have hardwood floors, sweep.
If it would be easier for you to do a load of laundry per day-then do so. Then organize the livingroom, kitchen, etc. Hope that helps.

To be organized you need a system for doing things. Always keep your keys in the same place, same with anything you use a lot or is valuable to you. This saves you hours of searching. Learn to have a part of your mind think about what you are doing at the moment as you are interacting with others and the world around you. The mind is a powerful thing and can be trained to do more than one thing at a time. You start out learning this conciously and after awhile you will do it subconsiciously without much effort at all.

It will be hard as being organised is something you are taught from being a child. If you are not organised now as a person this is down to the way you have developed and is part of who you are as a person. Just try to slow down and not be in so much of a rush. I always find this helps to remember where I put things etc.

Make an effort to keep things in one spot. Buy a nice decorative box and drop things in there and then you will always know where things are. I did this with my accessories because I was always taking them off and leaving them all over the house and could never find them when looking. Once I made an effort to put it in one spot it became a habit and I didn't have to search for things anymore.

we all forget things, we are only human. put your gloves in your coat pocket and also your scarf if it will fit. You say you carry a handbag, keep everything like purse, mobile keys in there and make sure it's always closed.
