how well can spanish speakers communicate with portuguese speakers?

Brazilian and European Portuguese are quite different. How well can they communicate with spanish speakers of different regions?

I'm a native Brazilian in NY and before I started to learn Spanish and had conversations with Spanish speakers in our native languages I could only understand 3/10 words they said....5/10 if they spoke slowly. In the end I did not know what they said 80% of the time.

Writing wise: Our Grammar is more diverse and harder than Spanish....we can understand their writing more than they can understand ours, this is due to the fact that Portuguese has 4 times as many grammatical rules and almost 2 times as many words than Spanish.

Portuguese from Portugal is very different in terms of accent... we have a hard time understanding them. They speak in a (want to be careful) Slovakian (Russian) style while ours sounds more influence by Spanish and French.

They may be similar languages but in the end they are DIFFERENT languages. Take it from me man..I'm a Native Brazilian that grew up in Miami (with all the Cubans) I would know how well we can communicate with our languages.

Pretty well, both the languages originate from Latin. There are even the same words in both languages.
Remember when I went to Brazil, know Spanish, and was very concerned about what to speak over there (not so many spoke English). Surprisingly enough the Brazilians understood me and vice versa. (Of course there were problems some times, but then sign language helped.)

I use Spanish daily.Portuguese is the closest language to Spanish.While it is true that they share a lot of the same words and grammar it is not true that they can understand each other easily.If you have a sentence of 10 words and 7 are alike then it is not true that you will understand 70% of what is said.I can understand a Portuguese book better.

We can communicate perfectly when we are speaking the same language otherwise it gets difficult because Spanish and Potuguese while similar are different like English and Dutch.

Well, I'm from Venezuela and to me it's quite easy to understand written portuguese, just like the other users said, we have very similar words, but when they talk it's quite harder, because we speak very fast and they speak very fast, and the pronunciation changes even though they are very similar when they're written... hope this helps

Spanish is very similar to Portuguese.
I speak both. there are some differences, but they are almost nothing.
I am brazilian. Believe-me or not, but I can understand better a person from Argentina than a person from Portugal.

my friend is from venezuela and he works with a man from brazil. neither speak english. they teach each other their language. they have a good friendship because they are able to laugh at the little differences in the words that make them not understand each other at times.

Both languages are pretty similar; you just have to use as many cognates as possible and speak sloooowwwwwwlyyyy!
