You talking about the prayer at the beginning of some football games? It's not as prevalent as it used to be but when you do find it, it's because this country was founded, primarily, by Christians. There were a few founding fathers that had no religion, as I remember, but not many.
Of course, the point was to go to God in prayer and ask for protection for the players. 99.9% of those attending believed He could. It's only been in the last several years since we've been straying from our Christian roots that the 99.9 number has been falling. If I were at an Iraq football game (if they had one) I'd expect to hear a Muslum prayer. I wouldn't agree but I wouldn't make a fuss. I'd just have my own little prayer by myself.

For both the word prayers and the word players, Christianity represents about 75% of the US population. It's just plain demographics that most players (and hence most prayers) would be Christian.
Plus Christianity likes PR and public displays.

The amount of athletes that are Christian is relative to the amount of people in the general population that are Christian. It just seems that there are more Christians than non-Christians because the Christians are a lot more vocal about their beliefs. Can I say Christian one more time in such a short answer? Christian!!! There, I am done.

It is a simple matter of statistical ratios.
Most football players are American (it being an almost exclusively American phenomenon).
Most Americans are some form of Christian.
Thus, most Fottballers would be too. I am sure there are some that are not.

It's because christians feel they have to be ostentatious with their beliefs -- like every one else cares or will be amazed at their fantastic (read fanatic) spirituality. I think it's rather arrogant for them to believe whatever god they believe in likes them best.
