There are many many lonely elderly people in the UK. Contact one of the aged charities, and ask about the scheme to befriend someone. It is the most worthwhile thing to do.
Many elderly people go for weeks without seeing/speaking to anyone.

You could phone your local day centre or hospice and see if they need any volunteers. Or, if you have a dog or cat of suitable temperament and age, you could become a Pets As Therapy volunteer - I do this and we visit two residential homes in the area. I've got to know the residents well and it's very satisfying visiting. PAT dogs and cats visit all sorts of places; schools, day centres, hospitals, hospices, residential homes - no religious affiliation needed!

On a personal level, I like that how about in your own neighbor hood, just ask around and see if any of your close neighbors need help and then just work outwards from there, Find a homeless person on the street and try to change his or her life, God is still in the miracle working business, you just never know what might happen, good luck and God Bless!!

You can volunteer at a elderly home or retirement center. A lot of them are in those places and may not have family to come visit with them. They would love to have some come read stories, play games, etc.......
