I had a lumbar puncture done and the results had 18 IgG monoclonal bands in CSF not visible in serum, 2+ oligoclonal bands in immunoglobin not present in serum and incraesed IgG in CSF. Does any one know what monoclonal bands are and what this all means? I have a neuro appt Friday, but have these results that I am curious about now. Thanks!

The elevated IgG and multiple oligoclonal bands are suggestive of multiple sclerosis.

Normally large proteins such as IgG are more dilute in CSF... that you have elevated levels of them would seem to indicate that there is some weakness in the blood-brain barrier which allows them to sneak across. Likewise, though many people might have one distinct oligoclonal band or a diffuse one, to have many distinct ones not in serum again suggests multiple sclerosis specfically.

But that's just a thumbnail analysis. Still see your doctor!
