Literally, a missing of the mark, according to the Hebrew and Greek Bible texts. God himself sets the “mark” that his intelligent creatures are to reach. Missing that mark is sin, which is also unrighteousness, or lawlessness. (Rom. 3:23; 1 John 5:17; 3:4) Sin is anything not in harmony with God’s personality, standards, ways, and will, all of which are holy. It may involve wrong conduct, failure to do what should be done, ungodly speech, unclean thoughts, or desires or motives that are selfish. The Bible differentiates between inherited sin and willful sin, between an act of sin over which a person is repentant and the practice of sin.

First understand this...A sin isn't something you think about doing though the Church will cast you as a sinner for just thinking about certain things. Sins are ACTS upon an others person or property that are harmful. You can't be absolved for your actions through penance as religions would have you believe. Your conscious will punish you and if you're caught doing bad to others the secular LAWS will provide further punishment. In other words you are responsible for your actions or lack there of and will suffer the consequences.

Sin is breaking one of the 10 commandments.1 we should have no other gods before Jehovah God.2 we aren't to make graven images(idol worship).3 We aren't to take Gods name in vain(cuss with His name) 4 Remember to keep the Sabbath holy,5 We are to honor our paren'ts, 6 we are not to murder 7 we arent allowed to commit adultery(sex) sins, 8 we are not to steal, 9 we are not to lie and 10 we are not to covet(want what others have, be jealous). The consequences is death and then hell. We can avoid that by, repenting and asking God to forgive us and Jesus to come into our life as our personal savior.

Sin is evil. It is ugly, shameful and wrong. Sin is death despair, and darkness as opposed to life, hope and light. It is anger and hatred as opposed to serenity and love. Sin tends to destroy wheras love tends toward creation. So a sin is any human act that promotes death, disorder, pestilence or any other kind of suffering in our world.

In theological terms, it is a transgression of God's law.

When you commit a sinful act you detract from the beauty and order that exists in our world. So the world becomes a place that is worse than it used to be before you committed that sinful act.

the word of god is about life. understanding this, helps you understand what a sin is. god told man to be fruitful and multiply. that mean be productive and continue life. life is measured on many levels of thinking. so ths make sin anything that interfere, interrupt or end life is how sin is measured. god is about life, the word of god teaches us how to continue life. so any act or behavior is only sins because they end life.
