Bruxism is the grinding of the teeth, typically accompanied by the clenching of the jaw. It is an oral parafunctional activity that occurs in most humans. Bruxism is caused by the activation of reflex chewing activity; it is not a learned habit. Chewing is a complex neuromuscular activity that is controlled by reflex nerve pathways, with higher control by the brain. During sleep, the reflex part is active while the higher control is inactive, resulting in bruxism. In most people, bruxism is mild enough not to be a health problem; however, some people suffer from significant bruxism that can become symptomatic.

Bruxism often occurs during sleep and can even occur during short naps. Bruxism is one of the most common sleep disorders: 30 to 40 million Americans grind their teeth on a nightly basis

There is no accepted cure for bruxism

But you can wear a mouthguard to protect your teeth.

She can get a mouth guard for that. And a dentist could help more than a shrink. It is just a habit and I think the mouth guard would be the best bet since it's hard to control yourself when you are sleeping.

A lot of people do it. She can buy a mouth guard similar to the ones boxers wear for about 4 or 5 dollars at a sporting goods store. This will help with the noise and her waking up with a sore jaw.

It usually stops all by itself.

yes, I may be able to help her. I have this too. I clamp my teeth as I sleep and during stressful times. I'm told by a dentist to wear a brace at night and sometimes in the day. So try that.

I used to 'squeeze' my teeth in my sleep but I called it 'gritting'. It's different than grinding. I actually broke a few teeth that way. I stopped once I got on antidepressants (Effexor) and an antianxiety drug (Klonopin). It's the only thing that worked for me.

I do think its only stress and nerves. My two kids ( 7, 8) do the same thing and I've noticed that it gets worst if they had some kind of a problem at school the day before

there are a lot of reasons why a person might grind their teeth while sleeping>>> but usually it turns out to be stress in your life that is going unconfronted that is the root cause>

seldom is it a psychical problem as the cause>

Squeezing? lol. I think you mean grinding her teeth. It's not a mental condition, just a bad habit. She should see a dentist, not a psychiatrist.

lots of people unknowingly grind their teeth while sleeping; is that what she is doing? not sure what you mean by squeezing. anyway, if it is grinding, they make plastic mouthgaurds for that now, similar to what athletes use.
