What do you say when you don't hear someone properly?

Hmmm?
Say what?
Pardon?
Come again? (that one always makes me laugh!)
Excuse me?
Huh?
Could you repeat that?

Or something else?

To tell the truth, I just nod and act like I heard them.

Depends on the situation most of my family and friends know that I don't hear well so I either hold up a hand or say just a moment let me move so I can hear you better. If it is someone who doesn't know then I usually say excuse me I didn't catch that.

I would say pardon. I sometimes can't hear the person when they say it again, so I keep saying pardon until they say "oh, forget it". well, actually, they say something a lot more rude! lol!

I am quite hard of hearing as a result of 40 years of playing electirc music too loudly. Apparently (so my childen tell me) I am wont to say "hmmm" in a high rising tone....

I say, I didn't hear that, I didn't catch that, or could you repeat that. Unfortunately, I have to say it a lot because I use hearing aids which are not like normal hearing.

I usually say "I'm sorry, I didn't hear you." Or if it is someone I know really well, I say "Huh?" Or if it is my husband and I am in a bad mood, I scream "I can't hear you so just quit talking!" (He is bad about trying to yell things from another room....drives me crazy.)

I think the polite way to let someone know you didn't understand them would be to say "Excuse me?" I also might say, "I'm sorry, I didn't catch that. What did you say?"
I think "Say What?" sounds trashy and rude.
