I grew up Catholic and never had any issues with having fun and going to Halloween. I must admit that I grew up in New Orleans and we also had mardi gras and all that other stuff that Catholics also had no problem with, including lots of drinking.

Why are other Christians so up tight about having fun on Halloween or so many other occasions? Would Jesus really mind you going to the neighbor's house to get some candy for the kids?

All matter or opinion - when it comes to religion there's no right or wrong answer - it's too damn complicated, you can't win lol

I don't think anyone would mind letting their kids go to their neighbors and getting candy. The problem with halloween is that it's all about evil and death and everything that's not God. THats why some christians have a problem with it.

Catholics are cool, but I don't know about the ONLY cool ones !!!

I think it more has to do with the family you were raised in than the denomination of your christianity. I am also Catholic, but my family is the type who sees everything as a joke. We sort of live by the motto "There's nothing in life that is so bad it can't be laughed at." When it comes to things that are categorized as sins in the bible (such as premarital sex, drinking, etc) our family chooses not to judge, but I can't say so much for our church. I'm not quite sure where you are getting this notion from. There have been times where we've felt like the 'black sheep' in our church community.

I think the problem has been magnified by Capitilism in the sense that Halloween used to be a celebration of the Saints which was the following day,but how can retailers make money from this?

Hm, well, I'm a Bible-fundie and I don't have any issues about having fun on Halloween. As long as I don't compromise my relationship with God or anyone else's. If there had been such a thing as Halloween is Jesus' day I think he would have been passing out candy to kids and using the opportunity to show the love of his Father.

I'd like to think I'm cool. ;-) Trick-or-treating resembles the late medieval practice of "souling," when poor folk would go door to door, receiving food in return for prayers for the dead on All Souls Day (All Hallows Day). It originated in Ireland, and is still popular here.

Luke 10:18
And He said to them, "I saw Satan fall like lightning from heaven."

There are two ways of looking at Halloween. Sure, from a Christian
perspective it's not especially great to have the kidlets dressing up as
the devil and whatnot. On the other hand, look at it from the devil's
perspective. You revolted against God and fell from heaven in this
primordial struggle against God Almighty Himself. In your titanic pride you
had high hopes of establishing yourself supreme in the universe. You
committed your greatest act of terrorism against God when you convinced His
own precious Adam and Eve to revolt against Him. You brought death
into the human race and you thought you had it made when God, as it
appeared to you, insanely chose to become human. On Good Friday you finally
had Him in your hand and you killed Him with all the savagery your
fallen angelic mind could invent. And now, for two thousand years, you've
been watching your revolt crumble as the Risen One turned all your
schemes into life for your victims and mockery for you. Now, so far from
ruling the universe, your face is on some stupid mask worn by a
6-year-old and the creatures you hoped to destroy are writing meditations
like this one to pull your pointy nose and remind you that the Christ you
killed has defeated you utterly.

Memo to Satan: Happy Halloween, loser!

I just wanted to stop in and say thank you for saying we are the "cool" Christians :-)

But seriously, I don't get the whole anti-everything kick the fundies (in general) are on. I would hate to think that God didn't want anyone to have fun.

Episcopalians are fun, we have wine galas and give out free wine on Sundays. Plus, we pretty much have an open door policy.

Interesting choice of words.
What matters is not how we are viewed by the people around us, but how God views us.
If we know Him, we would obey Him.
Catholic or Protestant makes no difference whatsoever.
