this is a question for christian parents. have you ever asked your kids (under 10 years old) why they believe in god? if so, can you give me a one or two response for what they said. if not, could you do so and get back to me. this should be interesting. please, no forcing them to answer what you want them to answer.

A while back, my brother (12 at the time) told me he didn't believe in God.

I was so proud!

I am not a parent, so I know the question doesn’t pertain to me. Yet, I can proffer an educated guess that almost every honest response will entail the stock answers that were given to these kids by their parents, or an even more sincere response, given by the kids, will be just that they believe because that was what they were taught to be true.

The point, that I gather, you are trying to make with this line of inquiry, highlights the truism, that kids are being led to a belief system, not based on the fact that it is ostensibly true, but is instead based on the fact that some authority figure emphasized that it is true. In other disciplines, such as in science, we teach our kids about the truths particular to that subject, but we also instruct them to not just take our word for it, but to experiment on their own. If a child wants to verify that a frog has a digestive system that really looks like the diagram drawn for them by adults, we have dead frogs that can be dissected by them at school, to verify this truth.

Religion, on the other hand, does not encourage this process of self discovery and independent corroboration, but instead religion emphasize “truth” claims, and then teaches the child that blind credulity in accepting these claims is the highest virtue.

It is interesting how religion, and forms of political tyranny, operate under the same modus operandi.

I have asked my daughter many questions about God ... without giving my imput
she says she believes that there is a God just because she feels there is .... she doesnt believe he is a man , but like the sun.. that he is a white light
she asks me about why people believe in different Gods and I have explained to her that people just think differently and are raised differently
but she thinks they are all the same light
she is 6 and although has been taught the basics of Christianity with a little of different religions in school
, we are not a Christian household but she does lean more towards Christian beliefs in other ways ( Jesus etc )
so she just does her own thing and believes what she believes ... making sense of things her own way

I'm a Deist, but I take my kids to a Christian church. My daughter, 9, decided to be baptized, and she said the reason she knew God existed is because when she is upset about something and then prays about it, she feels better.

I don't believe in prayer myself, but if she finds this helpful, I am happy for her. I will allow her to make her own decisions on these things.

When our daughter was 41/2 yrs old she walked up to my wife and said, "I don't really hear what he is saying but I think about his messages and your brain is thinking about what he is saying and you have to listen carefully so your brain is hearing what he is telling you. Mom, listen real carefully and you can hear what God is telling you." My wife wrote it down and left it on my desk a little over 5 yrs ago.

The closest my son gets to "believing" is acting out the stuff he sees while watching that "Avatar" cartoon. And let me tell you -- the way he splashes all the water out of the tub at bathtime, he's getting to be quite a Water-Bender....

My kid said because of fulfilled prophecy and archealogical findings that verify the historical accuracy of the Bible. She is 3.
