People seem to argue about whether Christians are bound by "the Law." There's always a discussion of how Christians don't need to follow "the Law" because Christ fulfilled it, but then the do have to follow "the Law" because Christ did not abolish it and every word of it is still there.

If the law is contained in the Bible, has anyone summarized or listed all of those laws and noted which ones Christians have to follow and which ones they don't?

I've heard people say that "the Law" is the 10 Commandments, but that's not correct either. It may be part of the Law, but the 10 Commandments is not what is referred to by references to "the Law" in the Gospels.

This is a serious question, and not one meant to mock anybody.

You've gotten some good answers. The Torah contains lots of regulations and cannot be kept now because much of it involves the Temple. I believe there's nothing wrong with using the Torah as a guide for holy living, but God isn't going to like you any better if you keep the Law. Jesus' disciples were all observant Jews, and it's hard to believe they abandoned their years of cultural and spiritual behavior after Jesus died.

And there are 613 commands in the Torah, but there are even more than that in the New Testament. God wants to purify our hearts, not just our outward appearance. Following a list of rules can be helpful in this process for some, but for others it's a matter of studying the Word and spending time in prayer with a desire to live the life God wants us to.

I wanted to add -- many of the 613 rules have to do with temple observance -- not possible since the Temple was destroyed in A.D. 70. Also, modern Jews give equal weight to the oral law -- traditional interpretations of the Law, such as don't eat milk and meat in the same meal. I read a dietary guide to Torah one time and it made my head swim.

OOPS! no one told you what "The Law" is. The Torah, as it's pronounced in Hebrew, is the first five books of the Bible -- Genesis, Exodus, Leviticus, Numbers, and Deuteronomy. There are some interesting sin lists in the last three of the books, but the entire text is the Torah.

The law includes the 613 commandments and statutes given to Moses for the Children of God. Those ordinances directed the way they were to live according to Gods' will. Jesus fulfilled the Law by example and by ushering in the new covenant. Now it is written on the hearts and minds of men, therefore as a Child of God, through this knowledge the desire to willfully sin has been destroyed.

Jewish stance is that we have 613 laws to follow. Gentiles have the 7 noachide laws to follow. It seems there are picking and choosing of which laws to follow by certain groups of people.

It seems like you already know what answer you want - something to fit your scheme of things, whatever that may be.

Personally, I will take the words of Paul from Galatians:

For all the law is fulfilled in one word, [even] in this; Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself.

god bless

there are over 600 commantments

the old testament should be used for knowledge not rules to live by

Jesus said it best

Matt 22

36Master, which is the great commandment in the law?

37Jesus said unto him, Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind.

38This is the first and great commandment.

39And the second is like unto it, Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself.

40On these two commandments hang all the law and the prophets.
