personally, I know that you don't worship Mary, so where did those fundies get the idea that you do?

are those fundies willing to believe every lie they are fed to them as long as it's against your Church?

Well, as demonstrated above, some of these folks take quotes out of context to justify their misrepresentation of Catholics. I daresay Edge has not bothered to read the entire document of each quote he posts above.

Or, like Mariposa, they claim that a person with an image of Our Lady of Guadalupe as their avatar "worships Mary." Well, Mariposa, you have a picture of a child in your avatar -- does that mean you worship that child instead of Jesus? Nice double-standard there, isn't it.

And others like Mike make claims like, "The Bible says to pray to God alone" but they never, ever, EVER cite the verse that says so. Because they can't. Because the Bible doesn't say that. The Bible says to *worship* God alone (which is what Catholics do), but worship and prayer are two different actions (you can worship in prayer, but prayer can also be supplication, confession, intercession, etc.).

And, of course, there are the so-called "former Catholics" like Bob who claim that they know for certain that the Rosary is a "ritual prayer to Mary" when it's really meditations on the life of Christ, or suggest that somehow Catholics think that Mary didn't need a savior, when we most certainly DO -- that's what the Immaculate Conception is all about. Really, Bob, you should have paid more attention as a child, but if you didn't, you could at least be courteous enough to investigate the facts as an adult.

People should get the FACTS and not rely on a few sketchy statements. We Catholics honor Mary the way Jesus does. We do not worship her.

Witness: I love Jesus. I also love my husband, my kids, old movies and chocolate. I don't love my husband, kids, old movies and chocolate the same way I love Jesus. I use the same word, "love" to mean very, very different things. Somebody who was just learning English might be very confused, but once they got to know me, they would see that I'm not seriously deranged - I love my Lord, Jesus, My Savior in the way that is proper worship. I don't worship my husband, but I love him the way a wife should love her husband. And so on.

These poor fundamentalists have such a great need to be exclusionary and condemn other people to hell, they can't find the slightest iota of mercy with which to find out what Catholics REALLY believe and who we REALLY are and how much we REALLY have in common in our love for the Lord and our willingness to do His Will.

I wish it would change, but it won't. Just watch how many thumbs down I'm given for this message.

In truth, there are some people who call themselves Catholic, who actually DO worship Mary. This is not a position at all condoned by the Catholic church.

Some fundamentalists take this and extrapolate that ALL catholics worship mary because there are prayers addressed TO mary.

They forget that prayer and worship are two different things. Mary is a person who is to be considered blessed. As the mother of Christ, she held and holds a position of honor. She is an example to Christians of a person allowing God to work through them and to use them. Catholics recognize this.

Many protestants become fearful when discussing Mary. They are so afraid of idolizing or worhsiping others beings than God, that they fall short of offering the due respect and honor that an individual might rightly deserve.

EDIT: Having just read onegammy .... Are you for real?
Do you mean to say that if you don't know something to be true, but you say you suspect it to be so, that that assertion constitutes a LIE?

I hope you never find yourself in court, as you are completely inable to distinguish from fact, truth, assertion and falsehood.

Yes. They are more than willing to believe -- and promote -- any lie about the Church in order to protect their own interpretation of Scripture, because if they move an inch on Marian doctrine their entire house of cards falls apart.

It's interesting to see the knee-jerk hatred that questions like this bring out, though.

The bottom line is, regardless of what the self-styled "experts" on Catholic beliefs pull out of their hats (out of context, of course, as is natural for those who cherrypick Bible verses to fit their own intrepretations), Catholics know what we do -- and don't do; who we worship -- and don't worship. I've come to the point where the endless dredging up of questions like "why do you worship Mary?" and the rest of the laundry list is merely annoying ... and a bit sad, but I can't do anything about that other than pray for them.

Pastor Billy says: in their race to differentiate themselves from Catholicism and establish new churches void of authentic authority they employed a technique of labelling the Church as of the devil. This was to convince people to leave her and join their new creations. After all everyone was Catholic and with so many Catholics what is one to do, put them all in a broom-closet? To claim Catholicism makes Mary God was a sure way in gaining new members as the simple man was most faithful and obedient to the early Church.

addendum: so sad to read the comments of BobL his lack of Catholic education made him an easy target as an eventual fallen-away believer into Protestant fundamentalism. To be brief, the Trinity doctrine is of Catholic origin, so to say Catholicism makes Mary God through prayer is to ignore the obvious which is Holy Trinity One God does not contain Mary.
Your understanding of the word "prayer" Bob needs examination, in early English prayer was simply "to ask" "to request" and not worship of deity.

Hmmm . let me see , well perhaps it is because they say that Mary is the mother of God , and because of that she is deserving of praise.

You really should read the Catholic encyclopedia , it explains fully the disgusting things they believe in , especially the pagan teaching of 'mother worship'.

Another Mary related lie is their belief in 'Mary's perpetual virginity'
In which Jesus half brothers as explained in the Bible were supposedly (according to the Catholics) his cousins or near by relatives.
So here they are putting their own reasoning ABOVE Gods own words found in the Bible.

Additioanally -- the Catholics outright ADDS things and teaches them as truth even though they admit there is no proof., as shown here in the Catholic encyclopedia.
¨Though the Gospels do not expressly tell us so, we may suppose that Mary was present when Jesus showed himself to a number of disciples in Galilee and at the time of His Ascension (cf. Matthew 28:7, 10, 16; Mark 16:7). Moreover, it is not improbable that Jesus visited His Blessed Mother repeatedly during the forty days after His Resurrection.¨

It is no wonder that with such an abundance of lies that it makes them one of the leaders in Satan's world empire of false religion.

Mary does have her place of respect in every Christian or Catholic Church.
I'm a fundie, so maybe you won't appreciate my answer.
As a former Catholic, I know how much Mary was promoted in the church. While that my vary from parish to parish, it was the Vatican that promoted Mary from my earliest years in parochial school. Praying is an act of worship. Praying the Rosary is a ritual of prayer to Mary.
But the best part is that the last Pope proclaimed Mary to be Co-Redemptrix, and therefore worthy of prayer, adoration, and worship. Pope Benedict has not rescinded that proclamation.
It was Jesus Christ who died on the cross for the sins of the world, not His Earthly mother.
Mary's pain AT the cross was that of a mother.
Jesus' pain ON was that of Mary's Creator.
