Todd: Yes, but that doesn't mean the universe hasn't always existed. I never said that it had to be in it's current state.

Dadof4: No, we don't know it had a start. We know it was condensed into a small area at one time. That doesn't mean it wasn't a bounce from an earlier contraction for example. That doesn't mean that small area of energy didn't always exist.

We are talking about people that believe in a god that was once pleased with animal blood sacrifices and then needed the blood of Christ to wash sins......what more can you say....don't ask them to make sense

Because from observation of the universe, it is expanding. It must have all been condensed together. Because the laws of physics come into play. At that very moment, somehow an explosion happened that set everything in motion and time started. But before that, science cannot explain it because where did all that stuff come from and how long was it in that state being held together by forces no person can even fathom. Science says that after that explosion time started. The galaxies got together and decided to obey the laws of physics and started orbiting around each other according to these laws which they all agreed on. Some of this mass decided to become starts and some planets. They orbited around each other according to their laws of physics and thus started time.

God existed before time and in fact He created time. The universe exists within time and therefore has a beginning and will have an end.
Of course we can't really get our heads around anything outside of time which is why so many people have trouble in accepting God. He has no beginning or end; a concept temporal creatures can't really grasp.

That's a matter of faith.. If your an atheist, and don't believe in God, then what you are asking is part of an evolution question. From my faith, God created everything in sight, and far as the eye can see,and as far as science can see by way of the telescope. God said he created the heavens and the earth, which include the Milky way and all the other galaxies.

Because of the universal Laws of Entropy. The first ,second and third laws of Thermal dynamics. We see them at work .That is what real science is all about .Being able to see the results and /or being able to duplicate them. We cannot duplicate the Big Bang nor see it,but we do see Red Giant stars and white dwarfs, quasars etc. So we know the universe is running down. Therefore ,it had a start.

the earth was without form and void and darkness was on the face of the deep.....so we really do not know how long it existed before God said Let there be light. maybe it did and then God came along and set things in order. which would go to prove the point that without God there is chaos. no form, void, and darkness. no matter how long you have been in existence, God can change the void and darkness inside you when he says, "let there be light"

You should really ask scientists this question, not Christians. The central tenet of science is causality. In science nothing happens without a cause and nothing exists without an origin.

Christians believe and are taught that God created everything. Now, I personally believe he used the scientific methods to create things - it wasn't like he waved a wand and poof! there's the earth! poof! there's a person! I guess I'm not your typical creationist. I accept that evolution is possible, like that species evolve over time and things like that. But I do believe God set it all in motion, and it's perfectly rational to me that science goes hand in hand with that.

Because of the so-called "red shift" in the spectrum of remote stars, scientists say that the Universe (our known universe at least) is expanding. If it is, it must have started from a very crowded beginning or a "big bang".
