Wow. There isn't enough space to answer this. No one would read it. I could write a book on this.
In context he was speaking specifically about the instance of the "religious" Jews requiring a person to ritually wash their hands before they eat. I have participated in this ritual and it in no way cleans your hands furthermore the Mishna doesn't even agree with itself as to the proper procedure.
In the larger context a few have answered as I would have. People have replaced the commandments, statutes, ordinances and traditions of God with their own traditions and commandments and teach others to do them.
Yahshua took a rather dim view if this according to the text. Yet look at what we have in the so called "Christian" church, Sunday has replaced Sabbath, Easter has replaced Passover, Christmas has replaced The Feast of Tabernacles (His real birthday, people eat HAM on their High Holy days (Christmas and Easter) as opposed to only eating clean food, some celebrate Halloween when the scripture clearly says not to adopt pagan practices.
Gee I don't know I guess Christians would be on the hot seat if Yahshua were to come to their congregation some Sunday.... oh wait... He wouldn't and he doesn't.
You all need to wake up. God is not mocked. Your false doctrines are condemning you just as the Pharisees false doctrines condemned them.
Repent! The kingdom of God is at hand!

False doctrines are being taught. Like that there is a burning hell where people are tortured after they die. Like Jesus is God. Like the earth and man wasn't created, they just happened. Like so-called Christian holidays that are actually pagan observances. If you would like to find out what the Bible REALLY Teaches, there is a book called "What the Bible Really Teaches" that you can get from your local Kingdom Hall of Jehovah's Witnesses. It will answer all your questions about the Bible and the true teachings. More information is available at this website.

The Scripture is talking about the tradition of men and their keeping the law of God out of tradition. They did not keep the law of God because they loved God.
For example: there are many people who go to church and sit on their pews and their mind is on Sunday's football game, their hearts are far removed from God and the things of God. This is why Jesus is saying they WORSHIP in vain. They serve God out of tradition, no love for Him.
This is why Jesus told the woman at the well TRUE WORSHIPERS will worship in SPIRIT & in TRUTH for the Father seek such worship.
This why obeying the Scriptures and receiving the Holy Spirit as they did on the day of PENTECOST is so Important!
Good question!
God Bless You

Well, there is the world's way and then there is GOD's way. The world's way is to clean up the outside and walk the straight and narrow. God's way is: turn it over to GOD and over time HE will clean us up from the inside out. We cannot change ourselves any more than we can change other people, only GOD can change us. God knows what we are capable of handling and what we can't.
If we try to change ourselves GOD will resist the proud but give Grace to the humble. Our righteousness has to exceed that of the scribes and pharisees in order to enter the Kingdom of Heaven. There is only one way to do that,By Faith in JESUS CHRIST. Take care and may GOD bless you spiritually.

People are either ignorant of what the Bible says, or they are disregarding it in favor of their traditions . . . . sounds like some people I know.
It means that it is possible for a person to worship God with fruitlessness. Even if they use His name. . . . scary, isn't it?
I often hope that those who rely on traditions which have been cleverly disguised as 'Christian' have a few righteous positions which are pleasing to God. Jesus was talking to Pharisees, and they worshiped God in vain because they did not recognize His Son.

Who was speaking, and who was being spoken to? What is the context?
Jesus, speaking to Jews under the law and how they abrogated the law.
Remember, the law was in place to be a witness against them, according to Moses. They gave the law lip service, but were quick to transgress it, justifying themselves in the process.
The biggest transgressors of law are the administrators of law.
The law of the Spirit has no loopholes. Intent, and not the action that follows intent is what is important. It isn't enough to refrain from murder. One must love even their enemies.

Jesus is talking to the Pharisees, a group of people who held to a very strict interpretation of scripture, much like the fundamentalist Christians of today. The Pharisees had taken their own ideas and traditions and twisted the scriptures to fit them -- again like the fundamentalists. Jesus is telling us not to fit the scriptures to our beliefs, but to fit our beliefs to the scriptures. Jesus did not follow a strict interpretation of the "letter of the law," but rather had a very loose "spirit of the law" interpretation. We are called to be like Jesus.

It is all in the heart if you love God or not. It is not by following traditions or rituals. Such traditions could be going to church, saying long prayers out loud, or not eating certain foods like meat.

Christ was speaking to the legalistic Pharisees. In context (KJV):
5Then the Pharisees and scribes asked him, Why walk not thy disciples according to the tradition of the elders, but eat bread with unwashen hands?
6He answered and said unto them, Well hath Esaias prophesied of you hypocrites, as it is written, This people honoureth me with their lips, but their heart is far from me.
7Howbeit in vain do they worship me, teaching for doctrines the commandments of men.
------------------------
Anyone can cherrypick verses and shoehorn them to fit a particular viewpoint. I'm certain you think verse 7 stands all by itself as an indictment of the Catholic Church, based on your previous posts. Try reading for context instead of seeing what you want to see.
