I am not sure that I have a favorite specific wine in either, but in reds, I enjoy French Burgundy as it is more subtle than the great French Bordeaux. Red Burgundy is made from the Pinot noir grape. Of course with the prices of them, much of this gets a bit snobbish immediately; all one has to do is mention Romanee-Conti and it is clear that either someone is well cultivated or earns too much money. I did have a nice Nuits Saint George (Les Meurgeys) on my birthday last month. This was from a private cellar and twenty nine years old so it was stunning. I had it with a grilled porterhouse with Roquefort butter and a salad.
On the white side, I am tempted to go immediately to the white burgundies too, but that would be boring even though they are clearly wondrous when they are well made. Again, money and exclusivity is an issue here. I tend to think I would choose a German Riesling as my favorite white, either a Steinberg, Marcobrunn or a Schloss Vollrads, all from the Rheingau. These wines are stunning when properly aged. I would choose any sweetness above the Auslese, probably a trockenbeerenauslese (quite a mouthful in its own right!) Something around the 1989 or 1990 vintage would be about right, but definitely a wine to be savored on its own, without food.
On the other hand, two wines I like, both drinkable and affordable, are the red (Lodi)California Borra Fusion (2004) for $15 and a white Spanish Pazo Senorans Albarino (2006) for $18.

Wine is subjective. What one person likes may not appeal to another. I will tell you my favorites and why. For white wine, I really enjoy white blends. Conundrum (used to be Caymus Conundrum, but now is it's own producer) is a blend of Chardonnay, Semillon, Muscat, Sauvignon Blanc, and Viognier. It is a well balanced wine that is easy to drink by itself and goes great with many different foods but especially shellfish and brighter sauces and light meats. I also like the Fess Parker White Reisling. It is off dry, a little sweet, unlike most resilings, and wonderful to enjoy alone or with food as well.
For red wine I mostly like Pinot Noir or Burgundy, Old Vine Zinfandel, Shiraz, Syrah and Petite Syrah. These are more complex tome and have a wider variety of flavor profiles depending on where they cam from, vintage and many other factors. All of the above mentioned styles of wine are of moderately low to medium price for the most part. Depending on whether they are New World (California, Argentina, Chile, Australia, New Zealand, South Africa)) or Old World (France, Germany, Italy, Spain, Hungary) You can usually find these styles of wine at modest prices.

White wine has a sweeter and subtler taste! It compliments a meal, in my opinion, much better. Red gives me a headache. My favourite meal would be gourmet chicken with white wine and a nice italian pasta!

white wine I love sauvignon blanc or pinot grigio. goes with a wide variety of food from roasted chicken to italian.
red wine I love a nice sangiovese or red zinfandel. Again, both go with everything from pasta with red sauce to big juicy steak.

Red Bordeaux is my favourite wine. I would like to have escargots (snails) for starters, followed by a medium rare steak with fries.
