I have a Hannspree JT02-37E2-000G LCD TV. Overall I'm happy with the TV but I'm struggling to get the picture quality as good as I feel it can be.

Obviously I know the deal about watching non-HD cable channels on an HD ready LCD and how the pixels will break up on the image. However, what I'm having trouble with is getting the right contrast, brightness, colour, luminosity, etc settings to make the image look good.

Generally I either get the image looking too washed out or too high contrast. That means the colours either looks dirty or far too pingy.

Has anyone got specific advice for the picture settings for this TV, or possibly general guidance on how best to set up LCD screens for best image quality.

P.S. I'm currently viewing my cable channels through a high quality SCART (that's the only output the cable box provides).

The LCDs are only made to show a certain way tweaking with the settings can make the image worse. try tweaking with the cable settings.

OK, let's get down to the nitty-gritty here. Why did you buy a Hannspree television? Was it:

a) Because they have been making excellent high quality electronics for many decades?
b) Because you read a lot of expert reviews recommending the brand?
c) Because it was cheap?

Don't worry, I already know it was c). And I'm afraid you have now found out WHY it was cheap. No matter what you do, you will not achieve the results you want - the inferior quality components fitted to the Hannspree will never produce such clear and vibrant pictures as those on, say, a Sony, Panasonic or Toshiba television. They cost more than the Hannspree, because they have better quality components - and hence have better picture quality.

Sorry, but the truth is you always get what you pay for. No matter how hard you try, you cannot make a silk purse out of a sow's ear...

It sounds like you're not getting a great signal. Have you tried playing a DVD through the set, using a good quality scart, or even better, an HDMI lead? If you have and you get the same poor results, then it's the set that's at fault, or possibly your expectations of it. From the model number you quote, I'm guessing it's a 37", which will show up any flaws in a non-HD transmission quite badly, due to its size. I've got a Toshiba 37" LCD set, and the Freeview picture doesn't look as good as my (non-HD) DVD player, but it's still pretty good. If the picture's significantly worse with cable than your DVD plater, then I'd get someone from the cable company to check the signal.

LCD tv's are generally low quality unless they are a very good brand like sony or panasonic.
The further back you stand the better the picture tends to look
