I had whiplash last year, and I had an exam to write, so I just went to my campus health centre. I was treated by a physio student who didn't really know what she was doing, and was really sore afterwards. Whenever I get stressed the whiplash flares up again: the whole right side of my neck is stiff, and my neck vertebrae click when I stretch.

The stiff neck must be some kind of muscle damage, so I'd imagine a physio is better for that. I also had very good treatment for whiplash from a physio once before. But the clicking gives me the idea that one of the vertebrae is still a bit out of place. Also, it's a whole year after the accident. Does that mean I need to see a chiropractor instead?

Medical insurance will pay for either, so all I want to know is who is more qualified to deal with this.

As a massage therapist, I have found that chiropractic work, in conjunction with massage therapy, is an excellent remedy for this type of issue. When your neck is stiff, it is usually the muscles that are affected. This can contribute to the spine being out of alignment.

I have many clients who come to see me for an hour of deep tissue work in the late afternoon, then go home for a good night's rest, and go to the Chiropractor first thing the next morning. This has worked wonders for the client, and the Chiropractor finds it much easier to do the adjustments.

You may find that if you do the two in conjunction, your healing time will decrease, and you may end up spending less money in the long run.

Best of health to you-

The best thing to do is to try both and decide for yourself. Keep in mind that you don't need to choose one or the other - maybe both have something to offer. Since you haven't tried the chiropractic approach yet, this might be a good time to try it out. If it doesn't help, make another appointment with the physical therapist.
