My cat has a habit, a few days after I change her litter and liner, of pooping on the bathroom floor, near her litter. She jumps in and out of her box, like she is confused about where she wants to go. I clean her box every day, but after she pees a few times, she doesn't like the smell it seems. Even though I use clumping litter and clean it regularly. I've even switched litters. Does anyone have any ideas of how to deter her from using the bathroom floor?

If your cat is using the litterbox when it is freshly changed but rejecting it after the litter has been there a few days, you may need to change the litter completely more often.

I noticed that my cat's litterbox still smells a bit even after it has been scooped - in order to cut back on that add about 2 cups of silica gel litter and 1/4 box of baking soda to the box, which makes a big difference.

If you are using any chemical or scented box deoderizers she may be rejecting that, too.

Your cat might need a bigger litter box or one with higher sides & make sure there is a at least a few inches of litter in it. You could also scoop it out more during the day; once/day is not enough for most cats. You can wipe the sides of the box sometimes w/wet paper towels. You shouldn't need to change the litter too often, but if you have to, try a mild-smelling soap. Also, try an unscented litter; cats usually don't like any kind of scent in the litter. If you have a Shaw's near you, their unscented litter is great!

First you should stop using liners as most cat's do not like them. Everyone I know that uses them has problems with the cat going outside the litter box. Second find a brand you and the cat likes and don't switch often it confuses cats and they like familiarity. Get rid of the liner and scoop the litter everday. Cat's don't like a messy box. Clean the box in between new boxes of litter. Also, if you have a lid on the box you could try it without. Good luck!

She's obviously trying to tell you that something isn't right. If she uses the litter for a few days after you change it then stops, then there is something wrong after a few days.

My first recommendation would be to add an additional litter box. Some cats require more than one to feel comfortable. Adding a second quite often ends litter box issues..

you say your cat poops on the floor a few days after you have changed her litter tray .try cleaning the litter tray out every day. i know litter is expensive but if you buy a scoop and just clean it out you might find this makes a difference cats don't like dirt on there feet

You might want to check with your vet. When our cats did this (all of them at one time or other) we found that they each had some type of urinary infection. We changed their litter to a newspaper shred and dumped it daily. This stopped them from using the floor, felt better on their paws, and their infections stopped as well. Granted its messier, but I've not had another problem since.
Haven't had any urinary problems with them either.

don't use liners.
you *might* need to change the brand of litter...something that hides odor more. you may also need to get another litter box. I have one cat and she has two litter boxes.
