i'm living in md for another two months. it would cost 130 to renew the plates for another two years and i doubt it is possible to be refunded for the time not used. so what, specifically, are the consequences i'm looking at for just not renewing my plates at all?

The Peoples Republic of Maryland will give you a refund (by mail) of the tag fees for any unused year, meaning that if you have over a year on your tags when you turn them into MVA, you will get one year tag fees (but not the other EMS fees) refunded! EMS Fees are $13.50 per year or $27 of your $130 fees. This leaves $103 for the tags, so your one year refund would be $51.50

If you drive on expired tags, you can be charged with driving an unregistered motor vehicle, and the car can be impounded. The impound fees alone will cost more than the tags!

Do you have an address where you are moving? Depending on the state, you may be able to register your car at your new home early. While this is technically against the law in MD, if you are only going to live there for two more months, you most likely will not have a problem. If you get stopped you just tell the police you have moved to (insert new home state), but are still moving things and finishing up work.

If you are a student, you can have the car registered in your home state while you are a student in MD.
