I have rarely been bothered by mosquitoes for a while. I have no reason while they don't bother except it maybe I like garlic and it interacts with my body chemistry well enough that the mosquitoes are repelled.
The below article discusses Deet and other natural ways of repelling mosquitoes.

In general in Thailand you should cover up because the sun is quite strong compared to the UK. Light gauzy cotton will minimize your skins exposure to the sun and mosquitoes.
Personally I don't like using mosquito repellants. And only my last visit have I had a problem with mosquitoes.
Good luck.

Which ever brand you go with get something that contains DEET. In fact, you can pick up some lotions in 7/11 in Thailand that have DEET. (chemical name, N,N-diethyl-meta-toluamide)
The stuff REALLY keeps the mosquitos away.
For awhile that ingredient was banned in the US but they've since conducted more research and determined if used properly it is actually safe.
Before I discovered DEET, most repellants only partially worked for me.

P.S. Mosquitos here in the US never bother me, but when i was in Thailand they really took to me for some reason. And even when I covered up they were able to still bite me through my clothes. I don't want to sound alarmist, but do yourself a favor and don't risk malaria, or whatever other nasty things mosquitos carry, and get a good product that contains DEET. Whatever small risk might be associated with it is better than the risk you take with mosquitos.

Anything with Deet but you only need to worry about mosquito's in the far north and southeast. That's where malaria is.

i found that the products that ive bought home (ire, so probably the same as in uk) dont work as well as those i got in thailand. in any thai pharmacy (druggist, as they sometimes call it-hilarious) u get a huge choice of products ranging in its strenght, balms, sprays, creams, lotions, alfersun care with added anti-mosquito reagent, all sorts.

Try Off or Bulldog.
Do not believe that Avon Skin so Soft crap. Even Avon was forced to put in a disclaimer now that it does not repel insects. Besides, monsoon season is over now.
