This is the list of softwares that i have being using for over 2 years then when i change to vista they still works great.
1-. AVG free edition (antivirus only), get it free at http://www.grisoft.com/doc/download-free...
2-. Spybot search and destroy (antispyware)
http://www.download.com/Spybot-Search-De...
3-. ccleaner (increase computer perfromance deleting unused entries and registries).
http://www.download.com/CCleaner/3000-21...
You must now that you can have more than one antispyware in one computer without any trouble but the same does not apply for antiviruses, you can have only one antivirus at a time. what i recommend is to use the spybot S D only once per week. Then use AVG and Ad-aware as default for daily use. Use ccleaner two times per week to keep your pc smoothly.

Here's what I recommend you get and run and then run them regularly. All are FREE at http://www.download.com
AVG Antivirus
AdAware SE Pro
Spybot Search & Destroy
CCleaner
These will help you keep your PC cleaned up and free of "malware" in general.
You should also learn to defrag you PC regularly. Search in download.com for defragmentation/defrag software. There are free ones there or you can use the one built into Windows.
Hope this helps.
