I've got all these symbols on my word documents that have appeared and I can't get rid of them. One of them is always behind the cursor. It kinda looks like a turned-round P and T joined together. Also there are dots between every word. How do I get rid of these?

The other marks are a nuisance, but the ¶ symbols are very useful: They show exactly where paragraphs end. If you can get used to them, I can show you how to get rid of all the other annoying characters. Here's how:

1.Click the Tools->Options menu item.
2.Click the View tab.
3.Under Formatting Marks, select ONLY Paragraph Marks and deselect all others.
4.Click OK.

That's it.

None of them will print, by the way.

The "P and T" symbol is a paragraph marker. It indicates where you typed a hard return (to start a new paragraph). The dots between words show where you hit the space bar. These symbols are useful for complete control over a document. They can be important when you get into using Styles in MS Word. If you want them off, the button that looks the same can be clicked to turn them off.

i know what you are talking about. Try either 1 of the followings, you will get rid of it.

Show or hide formatting marks
Click Show/Hide on the Standard toolbar (toolbar: A bar with buttons and options that you use to carry out commands. To display a toolbar, use the Customize dialog box (point to Toolbars on the View menu and click Customize). To see more buttons, click Toolbar Options at the end of the toolbar.).
Tip

You can also show or hide formatting marks by clicking Options on the Tools menu, and then clicking the View tab. Under Formatting marks, select or clear the check boxes.

These are 'Field Marks' and can be turned of through the menu or by a tool bar that looks a little like a musical note or similar to the mark following the cursor on screen.

Open Word and click on "Tools" and the "Options". Now select the "View" tab. Under Formatting marks, remove the check marks from any feature that you don't want to appear.
