I think to emphasize that the word "commandments" has an "s" on it. There's no picking and choosing which ones you want to follow. You follow the "commandments" or you don't. (At least to the best of your ability. Only Yeshua could do it perfectly.)

1 John 2:4
1 John 2:4

[He that saith, I know Him] He who professes to be acquainted with the Saviour, or who professes to be a Christian.

[And keepeth not his commandments] What he has appointed to be observed by his people; that is, he who does not obey him.
[Is a liar] Makes a false profession; professes to have that which he really has not. Such a profession is a falsehood, because there can be no true religion where one does not obey the law of God.
I think it is clear.
There are lots of people saying they know God and His ways, but they are not walking in His ways. They fear people, ego, status etc. than fearing the LORD. God put this verse for this era where lots of hypocrisy is practised. Many famous figures whom are well known as children of God are just making money in His name.
So let us be careful to serve the Lord whole heartedly without any compromises

There are Christians out there who claim to be Christians but do not do what God has asked of them. The verse is telling us that we can't love God if we don't listen to what He asks us to do. Very similar to 1 John 5:2. Basically if we love God, we will do what He asks of us.

Well the commandments does not mean ten commandments. In this epistle, John uses a word which means the will or the commands of God as revealed in the bible. A Christian is to keep the law of Christ. (see John 15:10-12; Galatians 6:2 )

1Jo 2:4 He that saith, I know him, and keepeth not his commandments, is a liar, and the truth is not in him.

We must keep the commandments of God it is our expression of love to him it is the distinction between a follower of Christ and a follower of the world

'The man who says, "I know him," but does not do what he commands is a liar, and the truth is not in him.'

I think so. People who choose judgmentalism and condemnation over the love that Jesus commanded us to have for other people and God should take heed of this: that includes all of us, and definitely includes me.

I believe that God wanted people to realize that you just couldn't make a claim that God is their God. He wanted us to realize that knowing him is more than just knowing of God. Knowing Him is seeking him and listening to what He is telling us to do. If we say we know God, yet we don't listen to what He is telling us and we don't seek Him, then we are lying. God just wants us to live for him and to seek Him to have a relationship. That's what I believe God is trying to tell us in this passage.

For one to know God means more than merely being a religious churchgoer. He would have to be obedient to the will of God.
