Not many I have met. They seem to prefer the easier of Jesus's commands to us -- go and preach the word -- to the harder and much more important command to love all people, God and ourselves.

The Bible is clear that we should to good to everyone but you can't divorce that from the Christian mandate to preach the Gospel.
Christians are not interested in "recruits" our motivation is that we don't desire to see people go to hell.
Physically helping people is of course an excellent thing to do but doing something that will help them for eternity has to be better. If I had the option of saving a soul or a life I would have to choose the soul. Eternity is a long time compared to the fleeting breath we have on earth.

What troubles me the most about Christianity is that it esentially turns against most of the laws of the old testament, the only place where God is credited with speaking to humans. The New Testament is esentially the 4 gospels plus a bunch of letters, mostly written by Paul to churches telling them to bend the rules of the old testament. Sounds like Paul's word, not god.

In response to the person who said Christians helped the victims of Katrina:
"Apart from a $5 million contribution to the American Red Cross, India has offered to fly across Army medical teams to New Orleans. Army, rather than civilian, relief teams are being offered keeping in view the worsening law and order situation in the city."

And no, they didn't mandate that everyone had to convert to Hinduism first ;-()

Of course. Look at the Salvation Army. Or most food banks. Almost all churches have services for the poor and very few try to convert; they witness by example.

The problem with (most of-just in case) the bible-fundies is that they miss the point that it is all first about compassion and love. All must flow from this or it is useless. The sole intention must be to love others not to save, that is God's job not man's.

Those "fundies" are not capable of helping people like you do. You are such a pure heart who gives for no apparent reason to anyone who asks you. You are sooooo much better than those "fundies".

I went to that trial at the Supreme Court to get "under God" taken out of the pledge. It was in January so it was freezing outside, we were waiting in line for about 12 hours. People started handing out hot chocolate and coffee. I was thinking how nice it was until they started yelling, "Did the atheists bring you coffee? No!"

Yes it is possible. I try to do so. The thing to remember though is that the greatest help that a Christian can offer is safety from what is to come. That is why we try to tell people about Jesus so often.

Impossible! Go to a Salvation Army shelter. Yeah they will feed you BUT you have to hear the comedy routine.

Perhaps sharing the most precious thing in their lives IS the very definition of compassion and love?
